Blue Devils lose in tiebreaker

The Section Five Class AA boy's tennis championship came down to the final doubles match. Penfield and Brockport split the four singles matches and two of the three doubles matches.

After losing the first set at first doubles 4-6, Devin Hogan and Dave Maxim stormed back with a 6-1 win to even the match 1-1. The third set featured two service breaks by the Blue Devils pair and a 4-1 lead. Penfield won the next three games to even the set 4-4. After trading two game wins each, the match entered the tie breaker to determine the Section Five team championship - first team to take seven points wins.

Brockport took a 2-0 lead on service breaks before Penfield won the next five points. The pendulum swung back again with the Blue Devils winning four of the next five, including holding two match points, to tie the set 6-6. The Patriots, though, would take the next two points, an 8-6 tiebreaker win, a 4-3 match and the title.

Seventh-grader Karthik Rajasethupathy won his third singles match for Brockport with a 6-1, 7-5 decision and sophomore Vishal Angugu won at fourth singles 6-1, 6-4.

Senior Mike O'Laughlin and junior Grant Dimbleby teamed up for a 6-1, 6-2 victory at second doubles for the other Blue Devil set win.

Brockport finishes their season with a regular season title - their ninth in ten seasons - and a 10-2 record.
