Gillam Grant sword promotions held

Iaido (Japanese Sword) promotion tests were held on May 24 at the Gillam Grant Center in Bergen. Byron-Bergen head Iaido Instructor Cyndy Jones was promoted to Yon-Dan (4th degree black belt). Kodak Instructors Dave Riedel and Andrew Gibson were promoted to San-Dan (3rd degree black belt). Jim Kunkel was promoted to Sho-Dan (1st degree black belt). All Iaido (sword) black belt promotions are made by Shihan (Master) John Drouin, formerly of Auburn, New York and currently of Lakeworth, Florida.

To earn advanced black belt promotion, all Iaido practitioners have to display extensive knowledge of sword techniques and their application. This involves years of training, teaching and dedication to Iaido as there are some 60 kata (forms) to be learned. Safety and self-defense is also a major factor in wielding the katana, bokken and shinai. There are many specific protocols and procedures as well. Respect, discipline and calmness must be displayed at all times.

At the same test, David Arnold was promoted to brown belt and Matt Haywood and Andrew Guest were promoted to green belt in sword. For information on the Iaido program call Gillam Grant (494-1621) or Collamer-Jones Karate (548-2801).
