"Bienvenida" celebration welcomes migrant farmworkers

Sunday, June 22, is the day set for the annual community "Bienvenida," or "Welcome," celebration in Brockport for hundreds of migrant farmworkers who have arrived to start the farming season. For over two decades the greater Brockport community has extended hospitality to migrant workers and celebrated agriculture, the number one industry in our area, in this manner.

Events begin with mass at Nativity Church, 152 Main Street, at 1:30 p.m. Following the mass, a procession down Main Street will end at the First Baptist Church, 124 Main Street, where, beginning at 3 p.m., a traditional Mexican dinner will be held. From 5 to 8 p.m., a dance will be held at SUNY Brockport Tower Fine Arts building, Holley Street.

"It's a day for building bridges and relationships, as well as awareness and appreciation for the contribution of farmworkers to the welfare and economy of this area," said Sr. Beverly Baker with the Brockport Migrant Education Program at SUNY College, Brockport. "They are often forgotten or, sadly, discriminated against."

The Migrant Education Program works with the Brockport Ecumenical Outreach Committee (BEOC), an alliance of many Brockport churches and agencies, to create the event with support of local businesses.

Barbara Deming, chair of the BEOC, encourages individuals in the community to come to the festivities. "Community residents of all ages show support by just attending," Deming said. "Each year we are also blessed with donations for desserts, photography skills, or decorating, cooking and serving at the dinner. Volunteers step forward from area churches, Scout troops, and folks just interested in building a stronger community. The Bienvenida is all about fun and hospitality, but we can always use more help."

Deming added that citizens can continue the spirit of the event by being aware and appreciative of the hardships of the farmworkers and their contribution to the community. For information or to volunteer, phone Deming at 637-7504.
