Assemblyman announces state grants

New York state Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R,I,C-Greece) announced the recipients of four grants from the New York State Archives. The grants fall into two categories: Documentary Heritage Program grants, awarded to community organizations, and Local Government Records grants, awarded to local governments.

Both types of grants involve records, which can consist of paper ledgers that are hundreds of year old or electronic files generated by computers and stored on DVDs.

Both the Documentary Heritage Program grants and the Local Government Records grants derive their funding from the Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund, which was established by the Legislature in 1989 and renewed in 1995 and 1999. The fund derives its money from a small portion of the fees paid when people file or record documents with county clerks and the Register of the City of New York. Under terms of the legislation, all of the resources fund the competitive grants, except for a limited amount that is used for technical and advisory services and administration of the grants program.

Awards under this program are subject to the allocation of funds by the director of the Division of the Budget following submission of spending plans for the LGMIF and Documentary Heritage Program by the commissioner of Education.

Monroe County grants awarded include Brockport Central School District -$23,638; Hilton Central School District - $25,472; Town of Ogden - $7,388; Village of Brockport - $4,927.
