Monument site gets a little sprucing up

If you happened to pass by the Firefighter's Memorial Monument on Saturday, June 28 you may have noticed a flurry of activity as Scouts and their parents from Troop 84 in Spencerport dug up the area, planted flowers and shrubs, and trimmed the existing bushes around the front of Brockport Fire Department Station 4 on Main Street.

Mark D. Czelusniak, 16, is an Eagle Scout candidate with Troop 84 sponsored by the American Legion Post 330 in Spencerport. Mark approached Monument Chairman Scott Warthman with the idea to support and enhance the monument project last September shortly after the dedication ceremony. His offer included a plan to landscape the area of the monument and provide the labor to complete the project. After meetings with the fire company which owns the building, the Board of Trustees of the Village of Brockport and Otetiana Council of the Boy Scouts of America, he received the go ahead. Mark estimates that he, with the unending support of his parents, Maureen and John, and members of his troop have racked up nearly 100 hours of volunteer labor to complete everything associated.

Mark solicited community support from Cardinal Lawn and Landscaping, Buttonwood Farm, The Garden Factory, Sara's Farm Market, Harris Garden Center, Van Putte Garden Center, Wal-Mart, Salmon Creek Nursery, Cobble Creek and Chase Pitkin Home Centers to accomplish his goal. These businesses all offered support in the way of materials and plantings to aid Mark in his mission. Domino's Pizza in Brockport provided lunch for the scouts after the project was completed. This accomplishment will serve Mark as his Leadership Community Service project, one of the final steps to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

The Brockport Fire Department is very proud to have been the recipient of this wonderful effort by Mark and his friends and family, and wish him much success as he continues his path towards Eagle Scout.
