Area students were among the outstanding high school students recognized in May by SUNY College at Brockport President Paul Yu. He congratulated the 3-1-3 Program students for having achieved a college grade point average of 3.25 or higher (on a 4.0 scale, equivalent to a B+ or better).

SUNY Brockport's 3-1-3 Program allows high school seniors to earn up to 30 credits toward their first year of a bachelor's degree before they become full-time students. Through the program, the students take a combination of SUNY Brockport-approved high school courses and first-year classes at the college. Students earn college credit while cutting their first-year tuition costs by about 50 percent. And, they may transfer their credits to SUNY Brockport or other colleges in the SUNY system and to many private colleges as well.


Sandra K. Small, daughter of Jeffrey and Kathryn Small of Chili, has been named to the spring 2003 dean's list at St. John Fisher College in Rochester. She is a junior and a biology and education major.

Small, a 2000 graduate of Aquinas Institute, is a service scholar at St. John Fisher College and is required to perform community service.


Nathaniel Emmerson, son of Debbie and Bruce Emmerson of Crestview Drive, Brockport, has been inducted into Denison University's chapter of Eta Sigma Phi.

Emmerson, a 2001 graduate of Brockport High School, is a Latin major and music minor at Denison. A consistent dean's list student, he also is a member of the Honors Program and a recipient of the Trustee Scholarship.


Student pianists from the studio of Barbara Woods in Spencerport performed in the New York Federation of Music Clubs Festival in February. All students earned superior ratings and received national honor certificates. The students are Alison MacKenzie, Nathan Wolski, Nathaniel Heale, Melissa Heale, Tessa Fox, Kristen McCannon, Vy Dinh, Steven Burek, Yonghee Cho, Alexandria Townsend, Abby Blakely, Andrew Callan, Jennifer Smith, Marissa Wimer, Katherine Wimer, Jennifer Trenton, Alexandra Keery, Nicole Townsend, Shauna Brongo, Nicole Moran, Alex Moran, Alicia Joerger, Jaime Clare, Jenna Callan, Andrew Liu, Tyler Davis, Alecia Giullari, Raymond Manioci, David D'Angelo, Olivia D'Angelo and Jarod Meagher.

Gold Cup trophies for earning three years of superior rating were awarded to Jennie Trenton, Nathan Wolski, Alison MacKenzie, Alexandria Townsend, Katherine Wimer and Marissa Wimer; for six years of superior ratings to Vy Dinh, Yonghee Cho and Nathaniel Heale.

Seven students performed in the District Seven Trophy Festival and earned the Noteworthy Achievers Trophy. They are Stacey Baumler, Ben Blakely, Laura Clemm, Ben Heale, Justine Locke, Meghan Shewman and Vanessa Taylor.


Benjamin Blakely, of Spencerport, is a winner of the Rensselaer Medal.

The Rensselaer Medal, the oldest prize of its kind in the United States, is awarded by more than 2,000 secondary schools throughout North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia. This award is given to students who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science. To be honored with the Rensselaer Medal, a student must be a member of the junior class and the high school's single most promising science and math student.

Each medalist who is accepted and subsequently enrolls at Rensselaer receives a scholarship of $60,000 payable in four yearly awards of $15,000 each.


Marisa Roach, of Spencerport, was named to the dean's list for the 2003 spring semester at Houghton College.


Boston University awarded academic degrees to 5,352 students this spring.

Among the graduates was Spencerport resident Jacqueline M. Ford, who received a bachelor of arts in biochemistry and molecular biology.


Shannon Lynn Granville, of Spencerport, was named to the dean's list at the College of William and Mary for the spring 2003 semester.

In order to achieve dean's list status, a full-time degree seeking undergraduate student in the School of the Arts and Sciences must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 quality point average during the semester.


Local residents were included among the more than 1,350 graduates and their invited guests who attended Ithaca College's 108th Commencement on Sunday, May 18.

  • Angela 'Muffy' DeFelice will graduate magna cum laude this summer with a bachelor of science degree in planned studies from the School of Humanities and Sciences. She had minors in both social work and women's studies. Recipient of the 2002 Scoones Community Service Award, she was one of only nine seniors given the Campus Life Award for exceptional service to the entire Ithaca College community. Inducted into "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges," DeFelice was also a member of both the Oracle and Phi Kappa Phi (national) honor societies. A graduate of Byron-Bergen High School, she is a resident of Peachey Road, Bergen.
  • Shane Bordeau graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of music degree in jazz studies from the School of Music. A graduate of Brockport High School, Bordeau is a resident of Talamora Trail, Brockport.
  • Sabrina Martin '02 (December) graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of music degree in performance/music education from the School of Music. Her performance instrument is voice. Martin also had a minor in advertising/public relations. A graduate of Brockport High School, Martin is a resident of Redman Road, Brockport.
  • Jennifer Hoyt earned a bachelor of arts degree in speech communication from the School of Humanities and Sciences. She had a minor in writing. A graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, Hoyt is a resident of Chili Avenue Extension, Churchville.
  • Darcie Schwarz graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in drama from the School of Humanities and Sciences. She had a minor in advertising/public relations. A graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, Schwarz is a resident of Jamie Lynn Drive, Churchville.
  • James Wolan graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in television-radio from the Park School of Communications. He had a minor in economics and a concentration in video production. A graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, Wolan is a resident of East Buffalo Street, Churchville.
  • Mary Rogers earned a bachelor of science degree in sport studies from the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. She was the recipient of the Professional Excellence Award from the Department of Sport Management and Media. A graduate of Hilton Central High School, Rogers is a resident of Westphal Drive, Hamlin.
  • Jason Tifone graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from the Park School of Communications. He had a minor in politics and a concentration in print journalism. Inducted into "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges," Tifone was inducted into both the Oracle and Phi Kappa Phi (national) honor societies. A graduate of Hilton Central High School, he is a resident of Parkway View, Hilton.
  • Lindsay Bedard received a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from the School of Humanities and Sciences. A graduate of Holley High School, she is a resident of South Main Street, Holley.

Joan Greeno, Associate Broker of Nothnagle Realtor's Chili/Ogden Office, received the Lister of the Month Award for May 2003 by Bob Malone, Branch Manager.

Greeno is a member of the Greater Rochester Association of Realtors (GRAR) and the Rochester-area Women's Council of Realtors (WCR). During her real estate career she has received numerous awards, including GRAR's Sales Master and Sales Master Gold awards, WCR's Pinnacle Award for outstanding commitment and service, and Nothnagle's coveted "Top 25" award. Joan also served as manager of the Chili-Ogden office during the mid-90s.

Currently, Greeno is working with Ken Brongo, K2 Development, in the prestigious Spanish Trail Subdivision in Ogden/Spencerport.

She resides in North Chili with her husband, Larry, vice president for Planned Giving at Roberts Wesleyan College. They have four grown children and seven grandchildren.


Army Spec. Caleb T. Raye has deployed overseas to a forward operating location to support the mission of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Raye, a cargo specialist, is the son of Nathan and Victoria Lund of Meadowbrook West, North Chili and a 2000 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School.
