Senator Maziarz supports "Do Not Spam" registry

State Senator George D. Maziarz (R-C, North Tonawanda) supports the creation of an online petition by which constituents may show their support for a "Do Not Spam" registry to reduce unwanted e-mail. Senator Maziarz' "Join the Fight!" online petition can be accessed through his web site, www.senatormaziarz.com

"Like everyone else, I am bombarded with junk e-mail every day," said Senator Maziarz. "I know how annoying and potentially harmful some of these solicitations can be. That is why my Senate colleagues and I approved the creation of a 'Do Not Spam' registry, modeled after the successful 'Do Not Call' registry. Unfortunately, the Assembly did not act on this measure during our legislative session."

The Senate-approved "Do Not Spam" legislation mirrors New York State's "Do Not Call" registry, which has virtually put an end to unwanted telemarketing calls. This registry, the first of its kind in the nation, has prevented over half a billion sales calls and served as a model for the recently-created national "Do Not Call" registry.

"New York has established an innovative and successful approach to these problems," said Senator Maziarz, "and now is the time for constituents to get involved in the legislative process and show that the issue of unwanted e-mail needs to be addressed."

In order for the "Do Not Spam" registry to become a reality, the Assembly must also approve the measure.
