Children learn performance skills
at Musical Theatre Workshop

For two weeks in July a group of students met daily to learn the basics of Musical Theatre participation. Each day the students had sessions on choreography and movement, vocal projection, stage presence, stage blocking and improvisation. The students' activities were designed to build on previous skills and achievement.

The leaders of the workshop were Director Wilma Slominski, a local singer and musician; accompanist Nora Hampton, vocal music teacher at the Taylor School in Spencerport and Choreographer Sarah Bourne, a 2003 graduate of Spencerport High School. The workshop concluded with a performance for parents and friends.

"The growth we witnessed from the first day to the culminating show was just incredible," said director Slominski. "The first day, we could barely hear their voices from the stage and everyone felt self-conscious about dancing and singing. By the last day we had a confident group of young performers who wowed their parents and friends with a performance that was based on what they had learned. We are thrilled with the success of this workshop and look forward to running it again next summer."
