Lecture series focuses on Cancer Awareness, Prevention

Session will offer hope, insight into cancer diagnosis and care

Rochester area cancer organizations will hold a series of free, weekly lectures on the many issues related to coping with cancer diagnosis and care to mark Cancer Awareness Month in September.

The series will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., each Wednesday in September at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, 657 East Avenue. Sign language interpreters will be on site and each lecture will also include a book sale.

September 3 - Catherine Lyons, R.N., M.S., C.N.A.A., will lead a discussion on how clinical trials help people with cancer while advancing the science of cancer care. Lyons is associate director of cancer service for the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center and Strong Health.

September 10 - Carmen Signorino, M.S.W., C.S.W., will lead a panel discussion on dealing with the emotional issues that accompany cancer diagnosis, care and survival. She is an oncology social worker for the Wilmot Cancer Center.

September 17 - Allyson Prace, R.D., R.N., C.C.N., will address ways to boost immunity using food as medicine. Prace is a nurse and nutritionist working in private practice, and an adjunct instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

September 24 - Humorist Scott Burton will offer insights into the power of humor when dealing with crises and every day life.

The series is sponsored by the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center at the University of Rochester Medical Center, American Cancer Society, Gilda's Club, Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation of Western New York, Rochester Museum and Science Center and the Center for Lifetime Wellness.
