Renee Perry, class of 2005, has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) on Medicine & Health Care, a leadership development program for outstanding high school students. While attending the NSLC, Perry had the opportunity to study, experience, and develop the skills and traits that define and identify a leader. This summer, approximately 1,500 gifted high school students from across the United States and from 45 countries around the world will find themselves immersed in a learning environment unlike any they have ever experienced. These young leaders return to their school with increased potential and newly developed abilities that enable them to make a positive difference in their communities.

Raymond Arnold of Hilton attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED) in Los Angeles, California in July. Having demonstrated academic achievement and an interest in a career related to science and health, Arnold joined more than 400 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across the United States at the Forum. He learned from medical professionals about medical ethics, the global effects of infectious disease, genetic research, public health and many other subjects relevant to the field.

Throughout the program, Arnold and fellow students experienced problem-based learning in a series of intense and stimulating simulations, many exercises of which are faced by students in medical schools throughout the country. NYLF/MED culminated in the Public Health Symposium, in which students developed programs to directly impact their communities on the issues of adolescent health, care for the elderly and chronic disease, among others. The goal of the exercise was to encourage the students to develop and implement programs as leaders, addressing concerns on public health issues in their communities.

Arnold is a student at Bishop Kearney High School where he will be a senior next year. He plays varsity hockey and football at school. He plays travel ice hockey with Rochester Youth Hockey, and Roller Hockey at ESL Sports Centre. He volunteers coaching initiation program hockey and girls softball teams and has also volunteered at St. John's and Alterra Adult Homes.
