Area landlords invited to ease GCC's student housing crunch
A shortage of student housing this fall has prompted Genesee Community College to expand its landlord registry, Director of Student Activities Clifford M. Scutella announced last week. Area landlords who wish to rent apartments or rooms to students are invited to call the college’s housing office at 345-6832 to place their names on the college’s facilities list that is then made available to students seeking housing. more

Brockport Fire Department to purchase truck and equipment
It took more than a year of number crunching and planning but the figures are in for the purchase of a new fire truck for the Brockport Fire Department, Chief Greg Wing said at the village board meeting on August 18. more

Brockport village operating a "zero tolerance" on loitering
Following complaints by business owners, residents and visitors, the Brockport Police Department will be operating on zero tolerance level on loitering on Main Street and other sections of the village. more

Hamlin hosting Heritage Day August 27
In what is hoped to be the first of many, Hamlin will be hosting its first Heritage Day. "This event came about because the Sesquicentennial Committee decided they should honor Hamlin residents, past or present, living or dead and we came up with this event," Shirley Hollink, town councilwoman explained. more

Local pastor named NY Chair of International Church Council Project
Tony Bartolucci, pastor-teacher at Clarkson Community Church, has been selected as chairman for the New York delegation of the International Church Council Project (ICCP). From August 6 to 9, he and approximately 40 other Christian theologians and church leaders from North America attended the Western Hemisphere Consultation on Theology in Ft. Lauderdale. more

Orleans Probation provides juvenile adjustment services
Orleans County Probation continues to provide services for Persons In Need of Supervision (PINS) through its recently reorganized Juvenile Adjustment Services Committee (JASC). This committee is a collaboration of the departments of Orleans County Social Services, Mental Health Probation and Genesee-Orleans Youth Bureau. more

Parma remembers its roots with displays on immigration

Boy Scout Troop 59 travels to Camp Bedford
Boy Scout Troop 59 from Clarendon traveled nearly 300 miles to Camp Bedford near Malone, New York led by first year Scoutmaster Mr. Kohmann and assistant Scout Masters Mr. Welch and Mr. Clark. The boys earned 26 merit badges in five days. more

Chili firefighters "Fill the Boot for MDA"
Members of the Chili Fire Department, Inc. will be conducting a "Fill The Boot" campaign for the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon on Wednesday, August 27 and Thursday, August 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the intersection of Union Street (Route 259) and Buffalo Road (Route 33) in North Chili. more

Family Wellness Center programs for September
Parenting - Wednesdays, four week series starting September 10, 6:30 to 8 p.m. This class teaches basic parenting skills, including challenges in parenting today. Among the topics discussed are emotional development, normal growth and development, and positive discipline. Fee $40, PC Members $20. Four Brockport Brownies have earned all badges available
Ashlee Wilmier, Leah Sharp, Allison Baker and Brittanee Ciurca (l to r) have completed all the Brownie Age Level badges available. Brownie Girl Scouts work on badges called Try-its and they must complete four out of six activities to earn the Try-it. more

Peddler's Market set for September 6
The annual Peddler's Market will take place at the Morgan Manning House, 151 Main Street, Brockport, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, September 6. more

Sweden Skate Park under construction
The long anticipated Sweden Skate Park is under construction at the town's Redman Road park. A crew from TrueRide, Inc. is installing the facility which was partly designed by Brockport High School students under the direction of teacher Brett Handley. more

Brockport bus mechanic finishes fourth in state competition
Scott Miller, a school bus mechanic with the Brockport Central School District for 14 years, finished fourth-place in New York state at a mechanics competition held in Albany on July 12. more

Meal prices for Spencerport schools listed
Spencerport Central School District meal prices for the 2003-04 school year are as follows: student breakfast price of $.75 remains the same for 2003-2004; Elementary K-5 lunch remains $1.50. Secondary lunch 6-12 increases to $1.75. more

Parma Free Center welcomes new teacher
Therese Flannery was hired to teach the 5's class and 4's only class at Parma Free Center, formerly the Parma Free Methodist Nursery School. Flannery is a graduate of SUNY Brockport and has extensive experience working with young children in educational environments. She says she looks forward to learning with the children through interactive activities to prepare them for kindergarten. more

Seventh-graders learn what helping is all about
What started out as a requirement for health class ended up becoming a lesson students won't soon forget. Seventh-graders in Patty Fallon's, Barb Harrington's and Jan Johnson's classes at the Brockport A.D. Oliver Middle School spent last year helping throughout the community. This summer, some students are still volunteering on their own time. more
