Sixteen student pianists from the studio of Barbara Woods in Spencerport performed in the New York State Music Teachers Association Greater Rochester District Student Achievement program in May and received certificates for their accomplishments. The program consists of evaluations in keyboard skills, written theory, and piano performance.

Those participating were Andrew Callan, Tyler Davis, Tessa Fox, Vy Dihn, Steven Burek, Nathaniel Heale, Alexandra Keery, Jennifer Smith, Justine Locke, Nicole Moran, Jennie Trenton, Katherine Wimer and Raymond Manioci.

Three advanced high school students competed in the high school honors division. They are Ben Heale, Yonghee Cho and Melissa Heale. Ben Heale and Melissa Heale were awarded honors plaques for placing in the top five percent.


Jamie Pricola of Brockport, daughter of RDGA/Brockport Country Club member Jim Pricola, has recently been awarded a $1,000 Rochester District Golf Association Scholarship. This award will be used toward her college tuition at SUNY College at Fredonia where she is a junior majoring in elementary education.


Navy Lt. Paul R. Burkhart, son of Linda J. Wood of North Chili and Robert H. Burkhart of Nelliston, NY, serving aboard the Norfolk, Virginia based destroyer USS Stump, recently participated in the seizure of $50 million worth of cocaine from a Colombian-flagged fishing vessel while conducting counter-drug operations in the Pacific Ocean.

The Visit, Board, Search and Seizure team aboard Burkhart's ship teamed up with the U.S. Coast Guard's Law Enforcement Detachment 107 to board the vessel. During the inspection, a hidden compartment containing more than 3,500 pounds of raw cocaine was discovered.

Sailors from Burkhart's ship swiftly took control of the vessel and its crew and escorted them to the proper authorities.

Burkhart's unit and its embarked Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron Light 42 detachment departed their homeports of Norfolk, Virginia and Mayport, Florida June 2 for a routine six-month deployment to the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command area of responsibility, which includes the Caribbean Sea, Eastern Pacific and Southern Atlantic.

Burkhart is a 1985 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School and joined the Navy in July 1985. He is a 1998 graduate of Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Virginia with a bachelor of science degree.


Army Pvt. Jared L. Fulcher has arrived at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama, to complete the ammunition specialist advanced individual training course.

Fulcher is the son of Nancy and stepson of Jay Halstead of Hazen Street, Hilton. He is a 2001 graduate of Hilton Central High School.
