MCC remembers victims at September 11 ceremony

When the sun hits the September 11 Remembrance Walk monument at 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2003 at Monroe Community College's Brighton Campus, it will illuminate two voids in the sculpture, reminding one of the loss of the World Trade Center towers and the thousands of victims who perished in the terrorist attacks two years ago.

The MCC Student Association and the Campus Activities Board will hold a remembrance ceremony starting at 8:15 a.m. Students will sing songs, Vice President of Student Services Dr. Susan Salvador and President of the Student Association Andrew Sharp will speak and there will be a moment of silence at 8:45 a.m., when the first plane struck the World Trade Center. One student will then walk up to the monument and place flowers at its base. Candles will be lit by 86 students, representing the 86 countries that suffered losses on September 11, 2001.

The monument was designed in such a way that every September 11, at the exact time of the first attacks, the sun shines through two voids in the sculpture and illuminates an area behind it in the shape of the two towers. MCC students were the driving force behind the monument and, together with architects from Sear-Brown and other local businesses, the monument was created and dedicated September 11, 2002.

The community is encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will take place behind the gymnasium outside of Building 10 at the back of the Brighton Campus.
