Brockport firefighters respond to working house fire

Firefighters from Brockport and Hamlin responded to a report of a house fire at 84 Lyman Street in the Village of Brockport at about 4:15 p.m. September 18. First arriving apparatus reported heavy smoke coming from the structure as they pulled up in front. Assistant Chief Mark Warner summoned extra equipment from Spencerport and Holley to fill in while Brockport firefighters extinguished the blaze.

One of the residents reportedly was napping on the porch when the smoke detector woke him up. He attempted to enter his home when he was faced with large amounts of heavy black smoke coming from within. He immediately went next door to call 911.

Extensive damage was suffered throughout the structure. The fire and resulting damage was primarily confined to a small bedroom on the first floor. The rest of the damage was caused by the heat and smoke generated by the fire and some water damage while the fire was being extinguished, according to fire department personnel.

The Monroe County Fire Investigation Unit determined the cause of the fire to be an electrical problem at a wall outlet. Extensive repairs will be required before anyone is able to live in the home and the American Red Cross has arranged for temporary housing.
