Spencerport improves business district sidewalks

Several weeks ago businesses along the east side of Union Street in Spencerport were notified that the sidewalks in front of their storefronts would be replaced. As part of the annual budget, the Village of Spencerport includes a line item for village improvements and maintenance. This year and next, they have decided to use this money for sidewalk maintenance.

To minimize the inconvenience to affected businesses, the project was purposely held off until after the high traffic summer season. Along with removing and replacing the sidewalks, the old brick pavers are also being removed. They will be replaced by stamped concrete.

Village Clerk Pam Gilbert said that the brick pavers were becoming harder to maintain which made them hazardous. It was necessary to remove them before anyone got hurt.

Along with the sidewalk removals, many trees along the edge of the sidewalk are being removed and replaced as well.

The sidewalk project on the east side will be finished within one week. The west side will be done in the fall of 2004 if everything goes as planned.
