Seven area players helping nationally ranked Brockport

The Brockport Golden Eagles football team is ranked in the top ten in the AFCA poll and they did nothing to jeopardize that ranking with a 37-14 domination over Frostburg State (MD) in their fourth game of the season. The roster is dotted with seven athletes from area high schools and several saw considerable action in the victory.

Spencerport native A.J. Covella relieved starting quarterback Bob Darnley in the fourth quarter and completed his only pass while carrying the ball twice on keepers. Churchville-Chili's David Harvey-Bowen rushed five times for 23 yards as one of four running backs seeing action.

On the defensive side of the ball, Churchville-Chili graduate Mike Vitale made three unassisted tackles while Hilton native Terry Gilmore chipped in with two of his own. Others on the roster are freshman wide receiver Kyle Heffron from Hilton, freshman linebacker Shawn Murray from Spencerport and sophomore tight end John Panek from Churchville.

Darnley is in the top five nationally in completion percentage and he added three touchdown passes in the win while completing 16 of 25 passes for 166 yards. Brian Wise caught a seven-yard touchdown and ran three yards for another. Hash Smith had a 16-yard fumble recovery and return for one score, fullback Jake Haught caught a 7-yard TD pass and wide receiver Matt Boorom added the other score on a 7-yard catch.

The Golden Eagles had a 37-0 lead before Frostburg State scored twice in the fourth quarter with Brockport's starters on the bench. Brockport next travels to St. John Fisher this Saturday (October 11) to battle the Cardinals under the lights.
