Holley Schools awarded
$392,000 physical education grant

According to Superintendent of Schools Vernon Hobbs, the Holley Central School District was awarded a $392,026 grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP). The grant program will help make possible a goal of lifelong fitness for Holley students and community members by providing the funds for fitness equipment of all kinds, supplies and staff training.

Holley physical education teachers wrote the grant application with cooperation from former Holley Village Mayor Dr. Daniel Schiavone and current Mayor William Quaranto. The grant includes a partnership with the Holley Recreation Department, which encompasses the village of Holley and towns of Clarendon, Fancher, Hulberton and Murray.

The Carol M. White Physical Education Program provides grants to local educational agencies and community-based organizations to pay 90 percent of the total cost of initiating, expanding, and improving physical education programs designed to assist students in making progress toward meeting state standards for physical education. Grant funds may be used to provide equipment and support to enable students to participate actively in physical education activities and to train teachers and staff.

There were 1,365 applicants from across the U.S. and 256 grants were awarded. In New York state, 13 schools were awarded PEP grants.
