Child safety seat check
provided by Spencerport Fire District

The Spencerport Fire District, in conjunction with the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen's Association, will be providing a new service to the community starting in November. The Spencerport Fire District will be conducting car safety seat inspections free of charge to local residents as part of their fire prevention and injury prevention program. The first in a series of inspections will take place Saturday, November 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at Spencerport Fire Station #3 located at 2588 South Union Street, just south of Rt. 531. Appointments are strongly encouraged by calling 727-1018.

Representatives of the fire district say they have noticed an alarming amount of motor vehicle accidents in which infants and toddlers involved were not properly restrained. The national average shows that the leading cause of death to children is unintentional injuries, of which 42 percent happen in motor vehicle crashes. If properly restrained, those number can be reduced by as much as 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Approximately 80 percent of the child restraints in use today are being used incorrectly. So for these alarming reasons the Spencerport Fire District recently sent three volunteer firefighters to receive their national certification as Car Passenger Safety Seat Technicians which entailed 40 hours of training, including hands on exercises, skills evaluations, a written exam.

The safety seat inspection is free to anyone wishing to have your child's safety seat inspected. There is no limit to the number of seats that will be inspected and the children are encouraged to attend for proper fitting.
