Burghardt nets two in win

Brockport scored five goals in the second half - two by senior Kyle Burghardt - on the way to a 5-1 victory over Hilton in boys soccer on Senior Night.

The Blue Devils had a goal disallowed at the 33rd minute mark and Hilton later threatened when James Eichas fed a cross from the left corner that Jason Orlando headed just over the crossbar.

After the scoreless first half, Eichas threatened again in the opening minute of the second half, but Brockport goalkeeper Mo Powell made a diving stop. The Brockport offense woke up shortly afterward.

In the 51st minute, Burghardt knocked a corner kick into the box where Grant Dimbleby kicked it in after a scramble to give Brockport a 1-0 lead. But the Cadets came right back one minutes later as Eichas found Orlando wide open on the right side of the box for an easy goal to tie the game 1-1.

Three minutes later, Burghardt took a penalty kick which Cadets keeper Sean Greif dove to knock away, but Nick Berlin pounced on the rebound to make it 2-1 Blue Devils. Burghardt made it 3-1 in the 59th minute as he made a move around a defender, charged down the right side of the box and put his shot into the lower left corner of the net for a 3-1 lead.

In the 64th minute, Burghardt scored his second of the game off a rebound from Jarrod Minor's initial shot and Paul Stevens scored in the 81st minute to remove all doubt.

"The seniors did a nice job, but getting all of them into the game affected our flow," said head coach Chris Zorn. "We were able to settle in for the second half. It's nice to get a win behind you heading into a nine-day break before the playoffs."

Brockport will be seeded fourth heading into sectional play.
