The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Monroe Community College has inducted 52 of the highest achieving students at the college. The students were honored for their academic success and involvement in college and community activities.

Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for the nation's two-year colleges. To be considered for membership, students must have earned at least 18 credits toward their degree, with at least 15 of those credits earned at MCC, and have a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher.

Area inductees include the following students:

Jaimen L. Brill, Bissell Road and Rebecca Ann Senf, Hunter Street, Bergen; Heather L. Huscher, Woodlands Way, and Chris A. Steinkirchner, Talamora Trail, Brockport; Caroline A. Zigrossi, Haverhill Drive, Churchville; Carolyn J. Jackson, Beahan Road, Matthew C. Parent, Linnea Lane, Jill Ann Stackpole, Cannon Hill Road, Chili; Timothy Westcott, Moscow Road, Hamlin; Rachelle M. Walker, Cooper Drive, Hilton.


Lyndsie Duemmel was named to the Orleans County 4-H Youth Development High School Level Honoree in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program at Orleans County 4-H's Achievement Night on October 23.

Sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the awards recognize outstanding community service by young Americans. Duemmel is now eligible for the New York state youth volunteer of the year awards. Two state honorees, one middle level and one high school student, will be named in February. Each will receive a $1,000 award, a silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C. for recognition ceremonies with a parent or guardian next May. Other honorees will receive bronze medallions or Certificates of Excellence.

At the Washington event, ten National Honorees will be named by a distinguished national selection committee, and each will receive an additional $5,000, a gold medallion, and a crystal trophy for his or her organization.

Duemmel was recognized for her efforts for the American Cancer Society, the Albion Orleans Correctional Facility Visitor Center and the New York State Games Equestrian Special Olympics.

Margo Bowerman, 4-H Team Coordinator for Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension, praised the students for their volunteer service, "The Orleans County 4-H has a wealth of volunteers and Lyndsie certainly epitomizes the volunteer and community spirit." The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are supported by the National 4-H Council, American Red Cross, YMCA of the USA, Girl Scouts of the USA, Camp Fire USA, the Points of Light Foundation, a Volunteer Center National Network and many other youth, service and education organizations.


Marine Corps Pvt. David W. Rogers, son of Merry L. Rogers of Hamlin and George F. Rogers of Brockport, completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

Rogers and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as "Marines" for the first time in their careers.


Navy Hospitalman Colin J. Arthur, son of Camilla A. and Douglas J. Arthur of Hamlin, completed a two-day pierside training exercise aboard the Navy Hospital Ship USNS Comfort in Baltimore, Maryland.

Arthur is one of nearly 100 sailors assigned to the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Maryland, who participated in the training which focused on training new crewmembers in mass casualty drills, litter-bearer techniques, and chemical, biological and radiological defense training.

The Comfort is one of two hospital ships operated by the Military Sealift Command designed to provide emergency, on-site care for U.S. combatant forces deployed in war or other operations. Arthur is a 2001 graduate of Brockport High School of Brockport. He joined the Navy in July 2001.


Army National Guard Pvt. Brandon C. Isaac graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina.

Isaac is the son of Ursula D. Isaac of Route 31, Brockport and 2003 graduate of Brockport High School.


United States Marine Corps Pfc. David Graham, son of Christopher and Cindy Graham of Hamlin, and a 2003 graduate of Brockport High School, has graduated from basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina. While there, he received a meritorious promotion to Private First Class.

Graham is currently attending the USMC School of Infantry at Camp Geiger, North Carolina.


Army Pvt. Jared L. Fulcher graduated from the ammunition specialist course at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama.

Fulcher is the son of Nancy Halstead of Hazen Street, Hilton and a 2001 graduate of Hilton Central High School.


Marine Corps Reserve Pvt. Jeremy J. Pullen, son of Mary J. Kobylanski of Leicester, and Steve E. Pullen of Hilton, completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.

He is a 2001 graduate of Hilton High School.


Marine Corps Pfc. Michael K. Sweet, a 1998 graduate of Spencerport High School, completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina.
