Eastern Orleans United Way campaign
falling critically short of goal
Volunteer leadership asks community to dig a little deeper

The Eastern Orleans County United Way/Red Cross Campaign is nearing the end of its appeal. United Way leadership and volunteers say they are very concerned that the community goal is in jeopardy, which may mean a reduction in funding for area services and programs. United Way officials project that the campaign could fall as much as $10,000 short of its $151,500 goal.

United Way officials are expected to announce the total campaign dollars at their campaign final report breakfast on Tuesday, November 18 at Tillman's Village Inn. However, officials note that, at this point, projections are speculative as campaigns are still underway. Allocations committee will meet to review funding needs and discuss recommendations in the likelihood the campaign falls short of its goal.

Officials urge companies to complete their workplace campaigns and appeal to the community to help close the gap. United Way leadership stress the need to send a strong message of the importance in reaching the goal to ensure the quality of life for residents of Eastern Orleans County.

"We appreciate the continued support and generosity of companies and individuals, but we need to dig a little deeper to help those who need us most," said Fran and Ray Lissow, owners of Lissow Development and United Way Campaign Chairs. "Many agencies rely primarily on United Way funding. Without it, the ability for agencies to continue providing vital services that help children, families, seniors, and the disabled is threatened. Funding cuts hurt everyone."

Several area businesses have stepped up to help close the gap. These businesses are showing their support and helping United Way fill the gap by running a community-wide special fundraiser. United Way "spare change" canisters are on display at several locations throughout Eastern Orleans County. Residents are asked to "spare a little change" to help meet the campaign goal. "Spare Change" canisters are on display at the following businesses: Apollo Restaurant, Arnolds Auto Parts, Dale's Market, Fischer's News Room, Fleet Banks, Golden Comb, Gotta Dance, Hair Fantasy, Hair Gallery, HSBC (Holley and Albion), Kanana Cafe, Pawlak's Save-A-Lot, Sassy Cuts, Shurfine, Sports Plus Graphics, Uncle Sals, Village House, Village Inn and Watts Farm. "The support of the business community is overwhelming," said Fran Lissow. "We are grateful to these businesses for going the extra mile and responding to our plea."

How to help:

  • Companies who haven't yet done so are urged to make a corporate gift or match their employees' gifts by 50 or 100%
  • New donors are urged to step up to help us take care of those who need us most
  • Help fill the gap - "spare a little change" (canisters displayed at participating area businesses)

A campaign shortfall would have a devastating impact on the ability of human care organizations to continue providing services to those in need. Eastern Orleans United Way supports vital services at 11 area health and human service providers throughout the county. These are programs the community relies upon to keep children safe, to help teens make smart choices, to strengthen families, to help the elderly, and to help those with disabilities live productive lives.
