A home filled with grace and love
The former home of Wilbur and Joan Gruendike at 4223 Buffalo Road, North Chili, was demolished on October 21, 2003. Built by Wilbur, the house was first occupied by the family on October 27, 1943, their oldest daughter Jean’s birthday. Jean was joined by her sister, Joyce, and brother, Larry, in a home that would host the celebrations and sorrows of seven generations of the Gruendike family. more

Brockport finds major water leak
A leak that was causing more than 3 million gallons of water to be wasted monthly was discovered and repaired, Trustee James Whipple announced at the recent Brockport village board meeting. more

Curtain going up on museum's new opera house
It's been silent for decades, but soon the little Frank E. Davis Opera House will sing again. Not with much opera, of course. Few, if any, of these 19th-century performance halls ever hosted such grand productions. But on the first three weekends in December, it will be alive once more with the sounds of the season. more

'Gateway' for Brockport is sculptor's vision
If all goes according to plan, sculptor Bill Stewart may be creating a metal sculpture that will be a visual symbol of the history and present day use of the canal in the village of Brockport. It will be entitled "Gateway." more

Ridgecrest turkeys have free range
One of the signs of fall in the area isn't just the changing of the leaves but also the size of the hundreds of white birds roaming the fenced in barnyard at Ridgecrest Turkey Farm in Clarkson. For over 19 years, Sharon and Mark Mattison have raised these free range, corn fed turkeys for sale for Thanksgiving feasts. more

Spencerport church is site for Kirkin' O' the Tartan
The Kirkin' O' the Tartan, a traditional ceremony dating back to 18th century Scotland, will be held Sunday, November 30, 10 a.m. at Ogden Presbyterian Church, 2400 South Union Street, Spencerport. Rev. Donald Windborne will preside at the ceremony which remembers deceased members of the Scottish clans. more

Student pilots at Ledgedale Flight Training receive a grant
Grant Sackel, president and founder of the Finger Lakes Aviation Foundation, and their representatives met at Ledgedale Airpark to interview student pilots who were selected to receive funding to go towards their flight training. more

Tree donation adds to canalside in Spencerport
Travelers on Route 259 in Spencerport village may have already noticed that there is a new 25' White Spruce towering majestically next to the Erie Canal near the gazebo. The tree that previously stood in this spot had declined in health in recent years and had to be removed. Both the previous tree and the new one were grown and then donated to the Village by lifelong resident, Joe Reinschmidt of Ogden-Parma Town Line Road. more

United Way/Red Cross Campaign
expects to raise more than $145,000 for community

Volunteers for United Way of Eastern Orleans believe that the annual United Way/Red Cross Campaign expects to raise $145,672, representing 97 percent of its $151,500 goal. Officials noted that this projection includes outstanding contributions of longtime supporters and results from area school districts, both of which are critical to the final figure. Campaign organizers note that a few employee campaigns are still underway and remain hopeful that the final figure will significantly increase. more

Republican members of the Assembly Housing Committee will host a forum in Chili to present information on affordable housing options in the Rochester area, featuring testimony from representatives of the NYS Housing Finance Agency/State of New York Mortgage Agency (HFA/SONYMA), NYS Division of Housing and Community Renewal, Governor's Office for Small Cities, the Fannie Mae Partnership Office and the United States Department of Agriculture. more

All on board for winter wonderland express
Choo Choo's Express has decorated the dinosaur train ride as a special holiday light show. The 29 dinosaur models have formed numerous holiday scenes, including a "fossilized Nativity," and a "prehistoric Santa," plus other scenes. more

The Salvation Army needs people to provide food for needy families this holiday season. A new "Banquet-in-a-Box" program will make it easy for people to provide all of the fixings for a home-cooked Christmas dinner. more

Gary Thomas directed the "BUM Players" Theatre group on two recent weekends presenting "Mystery, Maestro, Please" at the Brockport Middle School large group room. Each audience member was given a work sheet to choose the criminal and had fun in looking over clues. more

Couple receives advocacy award
The Martha Fitzpatrick Citizen Advocate Award was presented to Don and Donna Lowry by the New York State Rehabilitation Association to honor those who have helped to assure the quality of life for individuals with all disabilities. As life-long activists, in the 1960's and 1970s, Mr. and Mrs. Lowry were vocal in promoting inclusive public education for their son, Gregg, who has Downs Syndrome. more

Library offers playing cards for sale
The first deck of custom playing cards was released for sale recently. The standard 52-card deck of playing cards features a photograph of the Ogden Community Center on one side, and advertisements for local businesses and individuals, or library trivia questions on the other side. more

Local author features crafts and recipes in Funny Farm Book
Morris Press has recently published local author Shirley Cox Husted's latest creation, "The Funny Farm Cook Book," with 251 recipes and crafts for both children and adults ($7.95). more

Operation Grandma and Grandpa Claus brings toys to local families
The Landing of Brockport and the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport are co-sponsoring Operation Grandpa and Grandma Claus, a community toy drive designed to benefit local families this holiday season. more

Ribbon cutting held for Clarkson affordable apartments
Rural Opportunities, Inc. President and CEO Stuart Mitchell will cut the ribbon on the Seldon Square Apartments, Phase II, located at 125 Sunset Center Lane in the Town of Clarkson on November 24. more

Snowmobile safety certification courses offered
The New York State Park Police will be holding two snowmobile safety certification courses for youth. The one day course will be held on Saturday, December 13, and a second course will be held on Saturday, January 3. more

Barclay Elementary students recognized for recycling
Students at Brockport's Barclay Elementary School are making a commitment to recycle. In honor of America Recycles Day on November 15, 550 second- and third-graders in the school made pledges to recycle. The high return of pledges earned the school a $100 gift certificate from Chase-Pitkin and an ice cream sundae party. more

FASNY essay contest open to students Grades 5-8
Fifth through eighth graders are invited to participate in The Fireman's Association of the State of New York's (FASNY) 10th Annual Fire Prevention Essay Contest. more

Hilton Board of Education accepts superintendent retirement
Tuesday, November 18, the Hilton Board of Education voted (5-0) to accept the retirement of Superintendent of Schools John Cooper. "As we accept Dr. Cooper's retirement, we are reminded of his accomplishments in behalf of Hilton students, faculty and staff through the strategic plan and capital project," David Fisher, board president, said. more

"SOS: Saving Our Students" substance abuse
prevention effort on December 2 agenda

The Hilton Central School District Board of Education, Athletic Department and administrators have begun to address issues in the district regarding prevention of substance abuse. A task force, "SOS: Saving Our Students" is in the process of being formed and is seeking volunteers. more

Students bring AIDS Quilt to MCC
For two years, student volunteers sold 50-cent candy bars and recycled ink cartridges to raise the approximate $1,700 needed to bring a portion of the AIDS Memorial Quilt to MCC. It will arrive for World AIDS Day on December 1. more

Students earn college credit through MCC
Sixteen students in Rick Gage's Television and Radio Broadcasting class at the BOCES 2 WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center will earn six credits through Monroe Community College at the completion of their two-year program in the TV and Radio Broadcasting class. The students must pass a comprehensive statewide exam to earn the dual college credits, three in radio production and three in television production. more

Brockport's Salomone in elite company
SUNY Brockport head football coach Rocco Salomone became one of just five coaches nationally to take his team to the NCAA Division III playoffs in each of the last four seasons. The Golden Eagles were seeded third in their bracket in the 28-team field after their 8-1 campaign. Each of four brackets has seven teams with the first seed receiving a first round bye. more

Bright Raven Gymnasts win Judges Cup
Bright Raven Gymnastics was the big winner at the 2003 Annual Judges Cup held in Rochester November 8 and 9. Nearly 300 gymnasts from throughout Upstate New York represented 16 teams and Bright Raven finished first in both the Compulsory and Optional Team divisions. more

Greg Kenney: 26 years and counting
Greg Kenney was a student and swimmer at SUNY Brockport before NASA landed a man on the moon. After graduating in 1966, he returned to his alma mater as the head coach of the swimming and diving program and, except for an eight-year hiatus in the late 1980s-early 1990s, has been there ever since. Including this season, which started at the beginning of November, that's 26 years. more

Hilton Athletes for Literacy
reach out to Elementary Schools

Student athletes including Field Hockey member Jill Bower, form Hilton High School, visited students at Northwood Elementary School this fall as part of the Hilton Cadets "Athletes for Literacy" program which serves to expose younger students to youthful role models. more

Kendall girls soccer team goes all the way to semis
One year ago, the Kendall girls soccer team won a Section Five title, won the state qualifier and lost in the quarterfinals to Allegheny. This season, the Eagles again won a Sectional title; won their state qualifier and this time beat Allegheny 3-1 to advance to the state semi-finals. Elmira-Notre Dame was the opponent and Kendall fell 3-2 on a snow-covered and muddy Brighton high school field. more

Opening game is a tribute to Matt Fitton
Brockport High School's 2003-2004 basketball season tips off Friday, November 28. This year's opener will feature a special tribute to Matt Fitton. Matt participated in Brockport's basketball programs from third grade until his graduation in 2001. more

Parma skate park facility to get new ramps
Back in 1999, the Town of Parma became the first municipality in Western New York to build and operate an inline skate/skateboard park; and, even though five years later similar facilities are scattered throughout many towns within Monroe County, Parma's park is still well utilized by community youth. more

Record number may run in Thanksgiving Day benefit race
Pre-registration is keeping pace with last year's record number to run the 2003 Thanksgiving Day Race with Grace 10K (RWG) benefiting the Huntington's Disease Society of America. Hosted at First Bible Baptist Church, 1039 North Greece Road, the race has been named one of New York's finest races by "New England Runner" magazine. As a certified 10K road race, it has become a favorite with runners locally and across the Northeast. more
