Brockport finds major water leak

A leak that was causing more than 3 million gallons of water to be wasted monthly was discovered and repaired, Trustee James Whipple announced at the recent Brockport village board meeting.

The Department of Public Works and members of the water board were concerned with the picture of Brockport's revenue versus expenses when it came to water so they began looking for leaks in the system. "It's been repaired and we were hoping it would right the revenue and expense picture and it appears that it has," Whipple said. "We're back in the black in the water business."

In other matters, the board:

  • Heard from resident, and frequent board meeting attendee, Joan Hamill. She read from an article that was recently published in the Rochester daily newspaper that praised Town of Clarkson Supervisor Paul Kimball for his style in running his town meetings. "They have the best participation in the county," Hamill read. Kimball's policy on meeting is to allow residents to speak at any time during the meeting when something comes up that they might want to discuss. He doesn't believe in only allowing them to speak at either the beginning or the end of the sessions.

"I wish you would consider letting people ask questions at any time during the meetings," she said. "Even if what we say is a pain, we'd still like to be heard."

Mayor Josephine Matela thanked Hamill for her comments.
  • Heard from resident Bill Weber who spoke to the board members about a rumor he heard that village officials are looking at a usage for the old sewer plant. Matela said that officials are indeed looking into uses for the plant. "We will follow all rules and regulations if we spend any public money but we are only at the very beginning of the fact finding process."
  • Building and Code Enforcement Officer Scott Zarnstorff addressed the board and reported that year-to-date, he and his staff had received 151 building applications and had completed 791 building inspections. "We are on pace with last year," he said.
