Hilton Athletic Hall of Fame to induct six
at Holiday Basketball Tournament

The Hilton High School Athletic Hall of Fame has announced its newest inductees, according to Selection Committee chair Michael Whelehan of Hilton. The Hall of Fame will induct six new members on Saturday, December 27, at 6 p.m. at Hilton High School during a break in the Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament. Athletes and coaches whose contributions to Hilton Athletics have been termed outstanding include:

  • Jim DuPont, Hilton teacher for 30 years, coached boys basketball and girls soccer, was the most successful girls soccer coach in Hilton Central School history, won many Sectional titles and sent many players to college to continue play, retired and lives in Hilton;
  • Al Lowden, Class of 1947, In Memoriam, played basketball, baseball and ran track for HCS, played semi-pro baseball for over 15 years after high school graduation, his son, Bob, is presently the baseball coach at Finger Lakes Community College;
  • Tony Streb, Class of 1996, played football, basketball and baseball, played on football Sectional Championship team his junior year, led Monroe County in rushing yards two years, named to All-County and All-Greater Rochester football teams two consecutive years, lives in Greece and is Assistant Football Coach at SUNY College at Brockport;
  • Jenna Herington, Class of 1994, played basketball and softball, four-year starter in each sport, earning all-county in both sports, was named to All-State softball team as a senior, All-County in both sports and All Greater Rochester, went on to play basketball at the University of Rochester, lives in Syracuse and works for Paychex Corporation;
  • Ken Gavigan, Class of 1954, played soccer, basketball and baseball, All-County in each sport, played semi-pro baseball and baseball at the University of Rochester, volunteer coach in Hilton-Parma Little League baseball and Little Guy soccer for many years, retired and lives in Hilton;
  • Shanda Nugent, Class of 1981, one of most dominant girl soccer players in HCS history as a goalie, played soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball and ran track, one of few and last women athletes to play five sports for the Cadets, member of Sectional Champions in soccer, earning All-County in that sport as well as in softball, is a teacher in Miamisburg, Ohio today.

The Hilton High School Athletic Hall of Fame annually inducts former Hilton athletes or coaches who have made outstanding contributions to the Hilton athletic program, according to Whelehan. Qualifications are: graduate of Hilton High School who has been out of school a minimum of five years or coach who has been retired from coaching for five years; individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Hilton sports program or have established themselves in the field of athletics on the local, state, national or international level (professional, Olympic, college athlete, coach, etc.); a student who, while in high school, received athletic honors such as All-American, All-State, All-Greater Rochester, State/Sectional Championship, Athlete of the Year, or All-County, (overall team success and multiple-sport participation may also be considered); any student who participated in Hilton High School athletics may be considered under special circumstances in lieu of the previously stated criteria.
