SOS "Save Our Students" Task Force meets in Hilton

Fifty parents, teachers and community members met December 2 in the Hilton School District to address the issue of substance abuse prevention and underage drinking in a new effort entitled SOS "Save Our Students" Task Force.

Convened by Hilton district administrators with support from the Board of Education, the Task Force is charged with making recommendations to the Board of Education "that when implemented would assure that our students are making safe and correct decisions regarding alcohol, drug use and partying."

About 50 people attended the organizational meeting and signed up to work on four committees dealing with a review of Hilton Schools' curriculum in all areas of alcohol and other substance use/abuse; studying school intervention processes, procedures and links to agencies working in training and intervention; reviewing the research on successful programs used to help students combat drugs and alcohol use; and examining the relationship between the community and law enforcement in monitoring local drug and alcohol activity.

The next meeting for the Task Force is set for Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at 7 p.m. in the Board Meeting Room of the Quest/West Avenue School, 225 West Avenue, Hilton. Minutes of the meeting are posted on the district web site: www.hilton.k12.ny.us/subabuseprevention.htm.
