Smith nets 22 in Bees opening win

Rachel Smith scored 22 points, including three three-pointers in the first quarter, to lead Byron-Bergen to a 57-19 win over Holley in the girls basketball season opener. The Bees are defending their 2002-03 division crown and having reached the sectional semi-finals one season ago.

The game marked the return to the sideline of two-time Coach of the Year Tom Sherwood who had heart surgery several weeks ago. Dan Orbaker was also named Holley's new head coach during the week prior to the game.

The Bees staked out a 15-3 lead in the first quarter before the Holley offense scored nine points in the second quarter. The Bees defense held the Hawks to just two points to pull away in the third quarter.

Smith added ten rebounds to her game-leading point total. Alyssa D'Errico added 14 points while Dan DeSario led with 11 rebounds and Stephanie Cumming added seven boards.

Ashley Colby led Holley with six points and Krystal Sauer added five points.
