The Wilcox family of Parma has been raising puppies to be trained as seeing eye dogs for the last ten years. They experienced their first "graduation" and dedication of one of their guide dogs in Honeoye Falls on December 13. more

Retirement inspired avocation becomes second career
It's often said that when a door closes, a window opens. This unique twist to life is what the stories in the soon-to-be released book entitled, It's Never Too Late to Plant A Tree, by Mel and Morrie Herlitzer, are about. The book features people who have rewarding and successful careers after they retire. Included are President Herbert Clark Hoover, President Jimmy Carter and Alicia Fink. more

The year-round Santa
For most people, Christmas and Santa Claus come around once a year, but for Orleans County resident Ken McPherson it is a year-round venture. "The holiday spirit of loving and giving should be in our hearts the whole year," he said. The first time McPherson was asked to be Santa, he thought it would be a one-time thing. "But when I saw the kids' eyes light up when they sat on Santa's lap, I was inspired." more

Clarkson residents asked to respond to survey
The town board of the Town of Clarkson needs residents' input. They are asked to complete and return the written Town of Clarkson Master Plan survey form no later than January 16. The survey forms were mailed to all property owners in November. more

Dave and Dan Kaseman receive Award of Excellence
Dave Kaseman and Dan Kaseman, Spencerport graduates Dave in 1973 and Dan in 1974) received an Award of Excellence from the United States Department of State, presented by Assistant Secretary of State William Eaton. more

Ogden to hold swearing-in ceremony
The swearing-in ceremony for those elected to Ogden town offices, Gay H. Lenhard, supervisor; David Feeney and Malcolm Perry, councilmen; Lynn Bianchi, town clerk and Mike Schiano, town justice, will be held on Friday, January 2, at 5 p.m. at the Ogden Community Center. more

Spencerport Kiwanians donate
400 toys to Cameron Community Center

The Kiwanis Club of Spencerport recently donated and delivered 400 toys to the Cameron Community Center, which serves a population in the Cameron Street/Lyell Avenue Section of the City of Rochester. The toys were given out by Santa Claus at a party at the center on December 19. The retail value of the toys was about $6,000. more

Toy Shelf reps collect donation
Brockport Toy Shelf Representatives Charlene Veltz (l) and Ruthann Tryka (c) hold a $450 check presented by President Pam Young (r) of Brockport Rotary. During Christmas 2002, the volunteer "personal shoppers," (using individual appointments), provided 564 children from 172 families with a more joyous Christmas. Flyers go out to all children in the Brockport Central School District. more

Winners announced in Riga Recreation Holiday Decorating Contest
The Town of Riga Recreation and Community Events Department held a holiday decorating contest for their community. Fifteen houses were entered in the contest. more

The Monroe County Fair Association will hold its first winter garage sale on Saturday, January 10 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. more

Elementary students create a historical calendar
Whitehall Mansion, Brockport Training School and the Brockport Yacht Club are just some of the features in the 2004 Brockport Historical Calendar, created by elementary students. For the fifth consecutive year, students from Mary Wanzer's and Eileen Jungbluth's fourth and fifth-grade classes at the Fred W. Hill Elementary School put together a calendar about local history. more

Students in Hilton's Village Elementary School traveled to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department on December 16 on South Plymouth Avenue in Rochester to work with others to prepare holiday cartons of food and toys for needy families. Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn accepted cards made by Hilton students. more

Mime teaches Churchville-Chili students
a new way to commuincate

Using facial expressions, dramatic movements and a strong sense of humor, mime, artist and actor; Ricky Smith showed over 200 American Sign, French, Spanish language senior and junior high students that you don't need your voice to communicate. more

National Merit Scholarship commended students
Churchville-Chili Senior High School seniors Kelly Knox, Jonathan Morabito, David Stafford and Paul Wolski have been named commended students in the 2004 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are among 34,000 high performers nationwide to be commended and were selected based upon their 2003 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) scores. more

Northwood Elementary School fifth grader, Lisa Hook, performed with the Eastman Philharmonia Orchestra, the Eastman School of Music's college orchestra, November 21 in a performance of John Corigliano's Pied Piper Fantasy. more

Six different players scored at least seven points and Hilton held Rush-Henrietta to just seven points in the third quarter in a 54-45 victory Tuesday night. more

Churchville-Chili girls' varsity soccer team ranks nationally
The Churchville-Chili girls' varsity soccer team ranked 18 out of 25 of the top teams in the nation according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. more

Coach Chow Holiday Classic to be held at RWC
Roberts Wesleyan College, Wendy's Restaurants of Rochester, the American Cancer Society and Spencerport Central Schools, will be hosting the 13th Annual "Coach Chow" Holiday Classic Girls Basketball Tournament on December 29 and 30 at Roberts Wesleyan College. more

Knights of Columbus host free-throw competition
Hilton-Parma Recreation, in conjunction with the St. Leo's Knights of Columbus, will hold its annual Free-Throw contest on Saturday, December 27 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Hilton Village Community Center. This state-wide competition is free of charge and open to any boys and girls in the area between the ages of 10-14. more

Lovett, Weinert, Quattrini each win three for Bees
Kristine Lovett, Sara Weinert and Steve Quattrini each took first place in three events as the Byron-Bergen Bees girls' swimming team beat Pembroke 97-86. The boy's team lost 128-39. more

Nau hat trick leads Rangers
Junior Josh Nau scored a goal in each period to lead Spencerport to a 6-2 victory over Brighton in high school hockey. It was the first win of the season for the Rangers. more

Roberts basketball off to good start
The men's and women's basketball teams are off to good starts in 2003 as both teams look to turn heads within in the American Mideast Conference this year. Currently the women stand at 5-2, 1-1 on the season while the men stand at 3-4, 1-0. more

Smith nets 22 in Bees opening win
Rachel Smith scored 22 points, including three three-pointers in the first quarter, to lead Byron-Bergen to a 57-19 win over Holley in the girls basketball season opener. The Bees are defending their 2002-03 division crown and having reached the sectional semi-finals one season ago. more

Sweden/Clarkson Recreation programs
Fundamentals of Boy's Lacrosse - for 4th-6th grade boys and girls. The program will run for 8 weeks from January 18 through March 7. The cost of the program will be $40. The program will take place in the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center Gymnasium and is open to the first 35 participants that register. more
