Nau hat trick leads Rangers

Junior Josh Nau scored a goal in each period to lead Spencerport to a 6-2 victory over Brighton in high school hockey. It was the first win of the season for the Rangers.

Spencerport jumped out to a 2-0 in the first three minutes of the game when Joe Zaccaria scored on the power play with an assist from Dan Otto at the 2:18 mark and Nau followed twenty seconds later with his first goal when he backhanded a shot into the net. Chris Farnsworth received an assist on the second goal.

The Rangers scored three goals in the second period. The first came when Mike Maynard sent a knuckler into the top left corner of the Brighton net off a pass from Steve Balcerak for a 3-0 lead. Then Nau, with the teams playing four-on-four, scored off a scramble in front of the net for a 4-0 lead. It became 5-0 when Chris Mark and Farnsworth worked a perfect give and go with Mark getting the goal at 11:26.

Brighton opened the third period with a pair of goals to close the gap to 5-2, but Nau picked up the hat trick with thirty-four seconds left in the game with assists to Bryan Mannix and Farnsworth, who finished with a three-point game.

Freshman Roger Youmans made 39 saves in net for the Rangers to pick up his first high school victory.

"I sort of saw it coming," said head coach Tom Donnelly about the offensive explosion. "We changed lines and they were really clicking in practice the last week or so." The two teams combined for 58 penalty minutes in the chippy contest.
