Brockport's memorial to the fallen firefighters of the 9/11 tragedy is now featured in a nationally published book. The Firefighter's Memorial Monument, which was the "crowning achievement" of the late Chief Scott Warthman's career with the Brockport Fire Department, received a mention, and a photograph in a book called Firefighters, published by the National Fallen Firefighter's Foundation. more

Former Brockport fire chief remembered for his ready smile
While Chief D. Scott Warthman (chief ret.) will always be remembered for his spirit of volunteerism with the Brockport Fire Department and his skill in working with gold leaf and hand painting fire truck logo and fire helmet shields. But it was his ready smile that was always mentioned when firefighters spoke of the fallen chief. more

Hilton High School alumnus presents
classical guitar concert for community

Hilton High School alumnus, James Marron '82, will present a free community concert, "Six Poems for the Angels" on Thursday, January 8, at 7 p.m. at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 158 East Avenue, Hilton. The community is invited to attend this special concert of classical guitar music featuring music from Marron's new CD of the same title. more

HSBC bank supports greenway
Christmas came a week early for the Friends of the Genesee Valley Greenway with a donation from HSBC Bank. The $5,000 donation will allow the Friends to produce a long awaited and much needed Greenway brochure. This brochure will be distributed in response to information requests and made available at tourism centers, Chambers of Commerce and local businesses. more

Monroe County Christmas tree recycling sites
Christmas tree recycling locations are available across the county at no charge to residents. Towns, villages, and the City of Rochester encourage residents to recycle their Christmas trees instead of discarding them in local landfills. more

Walkable Communities Committee raises funds for benches
A fundraiser spearheaded by Brockport's Walkable Communities Committee member Carrie Maziarz generated funds for new benches to be placed in Brockport's downtown business district. more

BOCES 2 WE-MO-CO students learning to restore the past
Students in Tim Burnett's auto body class at the BOCES 2 WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center are restoring and painting a 1966 Dodge Grass Fire Truck for the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen's Association. The antique fire vehicle has been removed from the active fleet of fire fighting equipment and is maintained by the volunteers for parades and display. more

Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES is holding a public hearing on Tuesday, January 27 at 7 p.m. in Conference Room 7 (the James Green Room) at the Educational Service Center, 3599 Big Ridge Road, Spencerport. more

Chili Senior Center Programs
Weight Watchers - The Chili Senior Center is looking into hosting a Weight Watchers program on Friday mornings from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. beginning in January. A minimum of 15 people is needed to run the 16 week program. $159. There is a discount for Preferred Care members. The program is open to all adults. Call 889-6185. more

Free income tax preparation for senior citizens
A free Income Tax Preparation Service for low and moderate income seniors will be offered in the Chili Town Hall. This program is sponsored by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. more

Hilton blanked by Greece
Hilton failed to score a goal over two games as they lost to both the Greece Lightning and Greece Thunder 3-0 over the two-day Greece Hockey Tournament held at Lakeshore Ice Arena just after Christmas. more

Holley cheerleaders make
the season bright for three families
Thanks to the Holley varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads, the holidays are brighter for three Holley families. For the past six years, the cheerleaders have "adopted" three families at holiday time and purchased gifts for all of the family members. more

Mutton, Rogers pace Blue Devils
Juniors Tyler Mutton and Anthony Rogers combined for 40 points as Brockport defeated Churchville-Chili 66-54 in the first round of the annual Doug Westcott Memorial Basketball Tournament held at Brockport. more

Spencerport's Paolini makes AHL debut, named All-Star
Spencerport native Sam Paolini received an early Christmas present when he was signed to a one-day American Hockey League contract with the Cleveland Barons and made his AHL regular season debut at the Blue Cross Arena against Rochester December 23. The stocking stuffer was a third period assist he picked up in a 3-0 Cleveland win. more
