Mutton, Rogers pace Blue Devils

Juniors Tyler Mutton and Anthony Rogers combined for 40 points as Brockport defeated Churchville-Chili 66-54 in the first round of the annual Doug Westcott Memorial Basketball Tournament held at Brockport.

Mutton and Rogers nailed three-pointers to open the game and each scored seven points in the first quarter as the Blue Devils ran out to a seven-point lead. The Saints rebounded in the second quarter scoring eight unanswered points - six of them by Ben Dudek - to close the gap to one point. But Brockport scored eight of the next eleven points to take a 36-30 lead at half-time.

In the third quarter, the Blue Devils started with a 10-1 run and had a 16 point lead before the Saints got back to within nine points early in the fourth quarter on baskets by Tom Hammel, Kevin Speares, Pat Stenshorn and free throws by John Magliocca. The Blue Devils countered with a 6-0 run of their own to seal the win.

Jim Niziurski led Churchville-Chili with 15 points and six rebounds. Abdul Maali was tops in rebounding with eleven and added eight points. Magliocca had ten points including 5-of-6 from the line and Stenshorn had three of the team's twelve assists.

For the Blue Devils, Mutton finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. Rogers tallied 18 points including three three-pointers and shooting five-for-five from the line. Matt Ward had nine rebounds to go with his 11 points and Maurice Powell dished out nine assists and had four steals.
Brockport improved to 4-3 and advanced to play Honeoye Falls-Lima in trying to win their second consecutive tournament championship and the Saints were to play Spencerport in the consolation game.
