Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Nibbelink,
influential member of Brockport Historical Society

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Nibbelink, who was influential in the restoration process of Brockport's Morgan Manning House, died Sunday, January 4, 2004.

Morgan Manning House Historian Eunice Chestnut said her skills, knowledge and talents will be missed. "Right up until the time she entered the nursing home last year, Betty was active in the society," Chestnut said.

After a fire severely damaged the Victorian era Morgan Manning home in 1964, Nibbelink used her skills in the restoration of the house. "Betty was one of the main workers when it came to getting the restoration project underway," Chestnut said. "She helped clean soot, patch holes, paint and refinish the house. She had the ideas and artistic background that made her an amazing asset to the restoration."

In addition to her work on the Morgan Manning House restoration, Nibbelink was a strong supporter of the Western Monroe Historical Society and became that organization's second president. She also passed her knowledge of Early American decoration along to many students over the course of many years.

Funeral services were held on January 8 with a reception following at the Morgan Manning House for the well-respected artist and teacher.

Chestnut said she and Betty became very good friends following Chestnut's involvement in the Historical Society. "We were all very appreciative of what she did. This is a great loss to the society."

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Turgeon and Jean Cioffi, and a brother, George Hopkins, Jr. Memorial gifts may be made to either the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport or the Western Monroe Historical Society in her name.

Bill Jennejahn, lifelong Hamlin resident

Nancy Jennejahn lost her perfect match on December 28, and the Town of Hamlin has entered 2004 minus one of its greatest volunteers. Bill Jennejahn, lifelong Hamlin resident, succumbed to cancer just after his sixty-fourth Christmas.

Aster a life of dedicated community service, Jennejahn will be missed by many in the town.

"Bill was everywhere around the town," said Ed Evans, a friend of Jennejahn's. "He was the town's greatest volunteer."

Jennejahn, who retired from the Department of Transportation in 1993, had a hand in almost every town event. He volunteered countless hours at the Hamlin VFW. One of his largest efforts was to lay the groundwork for 50 acres of nature trails behind the VFW building.

Friend Gordon Lasch recalls Jennejahn's work. "From working on the baseball field, to catering events, to working concessions and doing maintenance work, Bill was always willing to help out," Lasch said.

Jennejahn was also active with Meals on Wheels, the Hamlin Republican Committee, St. John's Lutheran Church, the Lions Club, the Hamlin Conservation Board and on the Friends of the Hamlin Library Committee.

Dave Walch, Conservation Board chair, said Jennejahn served as the town's "resident wetlands expert."

"We're going to miss him sorely," said Walch. "He was a great man who put the Town of Hamlin first and always got things done."

Almost 39 years ago, Jennejahn met his match and married her. He and his wife, Nancy, both graduated from Hilton High School and got to know each other better while working at Duffy Mott. Among other things, they shared a common focus on community involvement and a love for people. After having their daughter, Tammy, the couple realized that financial constraints would not permit them to have as large of a family as they would like.

They turned to foster care and ended up being parents to 19 children. They also opened up their home to 14 foreign exchange children and hundreds of children whom Nancy babysat.

While Nancy has many volunteer projects of her own, her energies will be focused on continuing many of her beloved husband's endeavors.

"I don't know if I can handle it all," said Nancy. "As far as I am able, I will try to finish what he had started."

At Jennejahn's request, there will be no formal services. A memorial reception is planned for Saturday, January 10 at 2 p.m. at the Hamlin VFW, 1279 Lake Road. Those wishing can contribute to Hamlin Veterans' Memorial Park.
