The circus comes to Hilton

Northwood Elementary School in Hilton will host two circus artists during the week of January 12-16. This circus skills residency is slated to be a multidisciplinary educational experience. It will enhance the physical education, science, language arts, music, art, and social studies curricula, according to organizers.

Circus arts performers Doug Young and Rob Harvey from The National Circus Project will put on two assemblies on Monday, January 12 to demonstrate to the students the various skills involved in putting on a professional circus act. These will feature Chinese Devil sticks, spinning plates, juggling (balls, clubs, boxes, rings, eggs), Diablo, rola bola, unicycle riding and balance activities.

The educational week which follows prepares a group of 100 students to put on their own Greatest Show in School. These youngsters will spend part of each day learning circus skills and combining them into acts for the show. There will be a final performance of their very own, original Northwood Circus. This will take place Friday evening, January 16, in the West Avenue School gymnasium at 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend to witness their remarkable accomplishments. A free will donation of one non-perishable food item is suggested as your "ticket" in. This will be donated to the needy by the Northwood Student Council.

Other students will receive workshop instructions during their regularly scheduled physical education classes. They have been practicing in class and independently to prepare for this special residency sponsored by Northwood VEPTO. Community members are welcome to attend either of the Monday assemblies or the Friday evening Circus. Call Judy Roll at 392-1000 ext. 4502 for information.
