SUNY College at Brockport to have
new emphasis in public safety management

The SUNY College at Brockport master of public administration (MPA) program is now offering an emphasis (major) in public safety, beginning with elective courses summer 2004 and a full course offering fall 2004. The new emphasis will benefit many people in the expanding field of public safety, including correctional institutions, and ancillary services such as Emergency 911 Dispatch, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and environmental conservation. This emphasis will offer more opportunities for those studying the curriculum to expand their knowledge, skills and understanding of this important service and how the field of public safety can better serve and protect communities across the United States.

The Public Administration Program at SUNY Brockport is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), a hallmark of quality and assurance that the program meets national academic and professional standards.

The MPA public safety program is offering a summer elective course to be taught by Department of Criminal Justice Associate Professor Richard Lumb. The public safety course, EPS 600 Problem-Solving Planning for Public Safety Managers, is a distance learning course offered via the SUNY Learning Network (sln.suny.edu) and is the first to be taught in the program.

Lumb has been in public safety training and development for more than 35 years and has more than 28 years in policing, serving with the Maine State Police, and the Tallahassee, Florida and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina Police Departments. During his policing career, Lumb was the recipient of the Second Annual J. Edgar Hoover Award for contributions to enhance the professionalism of the field of law enforcement.

Besides the public safety emphasis, there are other emphases within SUNY Brockport's MPA program from which to choose. MPA programs in health care management, general study, and now public safety develop competencies in administration, management, and policy analysis for public service organizations, such as governmental, health care, nonprofit and public safety organizations.
