Fair Association wins award at state convention

The Monroe County Fair and Recreation Association was honored at the State Association of Agricultural Fairs convention that was held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center January 17-19. The Monroe County Fair won two awards - one for its agriculture awareness exhibit that debuted at the fair last July, and one for the fair's longevity.

The agricultural awareness exhibit was entitled, "Agriculture in the New Millennium," and included hands-on activities depicting "Safe Foods from Start to Finish." The exhibit was developed and staffed by Fair Director Carolyn Gauvin. The Agricultural Awareness Committee of the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs made the selection for the award, which included a plaque and $500.

The Fair Association also received a certificate of appreciation from Agriculture and Markets Commissioner, Nathan Rutgers, who recognized fairs that had been in continuous operation for 150 years or more. The Monroe County Fair was established in 1823, making it one of the oldest fairs in the state.

The 2004 Monroe County Fair, which will be held July 14-18, will be its 178th fair.
