Brockport police department strives toward accreditation

One of the goals Brockport's Police Chief Dan Varrenti set for himself and the department when he was hired was to get the department accredited - and that goal is nearing fruition.

At the January 20 regular board meeting, Varrenti presented updates of more of the department's general orders. "There are 110 standards for the accreditation and we have met about 90 of them so far," he said. "We're going through a mock accreditation drill in March and the formal process in September."

Receiving accreditation proves that the department has met state standards for the internal operations of the department. "This is proof, a guarantee to the community that the Brockport Police Department is offering the highest standards to the public."

Trustee Morton Wexler indicated that receiving the accreditation could possibly lower the insurance rates charged for the department.

"When we hired you, accreditation was something you said you were striving for," Mayor Josephine Matela said to the chief, congratulating him for being "about 90 percent there."
