SPOC keeps the grassroots movement going
For close to a decade, members of two Orleans county groups -- County's Citizens' Environmental Coalition (CEC) and Stop Polluting Orleans County (SPOC) - have been fighting to keep another landfill from operating within its boundaries. Oral arguments in their case were heard on January 23 in Albany County Supreme Court. more

Entries sought for Hilton Apple Fest Logo contest
The 2004 Hilton Apple Fest will be held on October 2 and 3. A logo contest is being held for a new logo to be displayed on sweatshirts, T-shirts, and many souvenirs. The new logo should have the year 2004 in it and the design needs to be screen-printable. more

Gifts from Twig Association
Lakeside's Maternity Department received a digital baby scale and a fetal monitor valued at $15,300 from the Lakeside Memorial Hosptial Twig Association. The 196 Twig members donated 7,831 hours to support Lakeside during the past year. more

Alesi bills aim to curb DWI threat
The NYS Senate passed a bill sponsored by Senator Jim Alesi (R,C-Perinton)(Senate Bill S.4420-A) which would increase the penalties for criminal convictions of drunk or drugged driving where a child is a passenger. The senate also passed a bill Senator Alesi sponsored that would increase penalties for refusing to submit to a chemical test (Senate Bill S.45). more

Localities one step closer to $100 million in E-911 grants
Assemblymember Susan John (D-Rochester/Chili/Riga/Rush/Wheatland) said the New York state E-911 board has adopted standards for the release of $100 million in grants to assist local governments in establishing enhanced wireless 911 (E-911) systems. more

B-B students ace PageTurner Competition
Students at Byron-Bergen Elementary School placed second in the local PageTurners competition on January 21. This was the first time that the elementary school participated in this annual competition sponsored by Genesee Valley BOCES. more

BOCES 2 district superintendent announces plans to retire
Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES District Superintendent Tod Eagle has announced his plans to retire in July. Eagle has been in education 32 years, the last 10 of those as district superintendent of BOCES 2. Prior to coming to BOCES, he was the superintendent of the Jamestown City School District where he was chosen as NYS Superintendent of the Year in 1991. more

BOCES 2 students in Heather Case's special education class at Spencerport High School deliver hot Meals on Wheels lunches to elderly residents of St. Jude Apartments in Gates each week. more

Developing a theatrical role
A group of students from area high schools participated in a theatre arts workshop organized by Project ADEPT (A Diversified Enrichment Program for the Talented), a Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES program. Working with actor and teacher Heather Standford, the students learned basic improvisation and explored different characterizations using physical energy. more

Hilton High School Music Program has received word from the GRAMMY Foundation of Santa Monica, California, the same group that recognizes excellence in the recording industry, that Hilton's Music Program is one of 100 finalists, in a pool of 7,000 applicants, for the GRAMMY Signature Schools Award. more

Jodie Hurtgam came to Hilton on a mission - literally. The 27-year-old Ransomville, NY native is a called teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School in the Village of Hilton. A called teacher in the Lutheran Church means that individual is committed to serving the Christian faith and specifically the particular ministry that has called him or her. more

Baxter pin helps Rangers stay #1
Alex Baxter registered the only pin of the match and the Rangers won nine other decisions and a forfeit leading the four-time state and defending sectional champ to a 40-6 victory over Brockport and retain their number one ranking in New York state. more

Brockport cheerleaders finish in first place
Brockport High School varsity cheerleaders competed in the Spirit Challenge Championship 2004 January 17. They took home a first place finish in the large co-ed varsity division. They also won Grand Champions when the judges awarded them a perfect score for their routine, beating out 26 varsity teams for the title. more

Bright Raven gymnasts win in Utica
The Bright Raven Gymnastics girls optional teams traveled to Utica January 17 to compete in the 2004 Leatherstocking Invitational and came home with many awards. more

Cadets in fight for another title
Seniors Amy Pratt and Marisa Clark each scored 17 points as Hilton held off Churchville-Chili 48-44 in girls basketball. The Cadets ninth win of the season put them in a battle with Penfield and Rush-Henrietta as they look to defend their Section V title. more

CC Girls Varsity Soccer Team
recognized for outstanding season

The Churchville-Chili's Girls' Varsity Soccer team was recognized by the Board of Education for their outstanding season. The team ranked 18 out of 25 of the top teams in the nation; according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. more

Rangers with eight firsts
Spencerport won the first eight events and swam the final four exhibition in a 95-51 victory over Hilton in boys swimming. more

Registrations set for Sweden/Clarkson Rec Center programs
The Sweden/Clarkson Recreation Summer Day Camp will be held from June 28 to August 13. Children in grades K-3 will attend the Summer Camp at the Ginther School while children in grades 4-7 will be at the Barclay School. more

Saints win record 10th game
Churchville-Chili's hockey team entered uncharted territory several weeks ago when they equaled their previous high in wins in a season with their fifth. Now that record has been shattered as the Saints defeated Brighton 3-1 for their tenth victory of the season. more

Softball Clinic open to girls in grades 4-8
Mercy High School varsity players and coaches will hold a fastpitch softball clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, in the school gym, Blossom Road at Clover Street. more
