Pat Groves

Uncommon Denominators exhibit
built on links between teachers

Brockport High School Art Teacher Pat Groves' art work is on display at The Little Gallery at Nazareth College Arts Center until February 18 (exhibit hours: 9-4 Monday-Friday). The collaborative exhibit called "Uncommon Denominators" also features photography and digital images by Terry Kolb, supervisor of student teachers at Nazareth.

Groves' current work is based on digital manipulation of everyday, common items found in the environment. She says her work is influenced by the bold colors, geometric forms, quality of light, and dynamic compositions found in the work of Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, and Joseph Stella. Among her displayed work will be a painting titled Adjust Image: Invert: which received an exemplary award at a recent New York State Art Teachers Conference.

Groves and Kolb have worked together to build their professional artist/teacher careers. Although they have very different personalities, they share many commonalities. Kolb hired Groves for her first teaching job where they became good friends and advocates for each other. They ended up teaching in neighboring school districts, linking often on educational artistic issues. The common denominators they share, such as the same birth month and day, involvement in many projects and with the New York State Art Teachers Association are offset by subtle differences, thus calling the exhibit "Uncommon Denominators."

Returning to college for graduate study, Groves will complete her Master's in Art Education at Nazareth in May. Groves has taught art for 28 years, 18 in the Brockport Central School district, and is currently chairperson of the Art Department at the high school.
