Holley teams place first at Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament

Holley Elementary School will be sending two teams to the 2004 New York State Odyssey of the Mind Association (NYSOMA) State Tournament at Binghamton University on March 13. Both teams placed first in the regional tournament at Wilson High School in Wilson, New York on February 21.

The Holley Division II group selected the "Feature Creature" problem, which required them to create and present an original performance about mythological creatures. The team chose Satar, half goat and half man. They also created a creature of their own, half seal and half man, named "Sea Wee Herman." The performance even involved a circus on Mount Olympus and a performance by "Elvis."

The Holley Division I group selected the "Envirover" problem, which is to build and drive a human-powered Envirover vehicle that will collect trash and deliver it to a factory, where it is used to manufacture a product of the team's design. The team's vehicle gathered trash and delivered it to "Holley Hats," a factory where the students made hats out of trash.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Students apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literacy classics.
