Blue Devils netters win sectional championship

It's not worth winning if it comes easy, and it was anything but easy for Brockport as they defeated Greece Arcadia 25-19, 27-25, 22-25, 8-25, 25-23 to take their second Section Five girl's volleyball title in three years.

"They have never gotten to ride on a fire truck and they wanted to ride," said head coach Erin Kimmel during the celebration about the Brockport tradition of having championship teams chauffeured into town on fire trucks.

The fire trucks stayed on call a little longer than Brockport wanted. After coming from behind late to win both the first and second games including fending off two game points in game two, the Blue Devils self-destructed. The Titans scored the final three points to take the third game and throttled the Blue Devils in the fourth game by seventeen points.

The fifth and deciding game featured the Blue Devils leading by as many as five points and nine ties including 23-23. Seniors then rose to the occasion as first Danielle LeBeau and then Jamie Hugelmaier knocked down kills for the title.

"We lost momentum and got down too far in the fourth game," said Most Valuable Player Jamie Hugelmaier. "But it came down to our heart. I told Danielle to keep ripping even after she hit two in row long and she came through. She picked me up because I was down."

Hugelmaier finished with 13 kills and 20 digs while LeBeau led with 18 kills and 15 digs. Jessica Laney and Jackie Steubing each added ten kills to the attack and Ashley Olsheski dished out 43 assists. LeBeau and Laney joined Hugelmaier on the All-Tournament Team.
