All new assessments mailed

Town of Clarkson Assessor Pamela Dolliver informs property owners that all notices to property owners regarding the new full value property assessments have been mailed.

Dolliver reminds property owners to focus on the new full value assessment and to determine if this is the approximate current full market value of your property. The assessor further reminds property owners that their previous assessment was at an approximate level of 50 percent of full market value. The new preliminary assessment is at 100 percent of market value.

If property owners do not agree with their new full value assessment, there is a specific process that must be followed to challenge that assessment. Property owners can pick up the various review applications at the special satellite site, located at the Seymour Library, 161 East Avenue at specific times. Property owners received as part of their notification package, a complete list of instructions, with office hours for the satellite site. If anyone needs additional information they may call the assessor's office at 637-1135. All inquiries, applications and information is located at this special site.

Informal hearings are by appointment only. Residential property owners can call 1-800-836-0382 ext. 3002 and commercial property owners can call 1-800-836-0382 ext. 3031. Hearings will be held at the Seymour Library, and all data used to determine values will be available at this time. Results of the Informal Review will be mailed prior to May 1, tentative roll date.

Property owners will have the annual opportunity to challenge their assessment with the Board of Assessment Review, if they are not satisfied with the results of the Informal Review process. The Board of Assessment Review meets the fourth Tuesday of May, or May 27, 2004 for this year. A publication distributed by New York State titled "How to File a Complaint on your Assessment" is available at the assessor's office. This publication is for the board of assessment review process. Property owners are urged to participate in the Informal Review process first.

Dolliver further reminds senior citizen property owners that all appropriate exemptions will be applied before tax bills are processed. The new assessments will take effect with the September school bills.
