Local student to attend
national competition for woodwinds

SUNY Potsdam junior Michelle Keenan of Spencerport will compete as a finalist in the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA) Young Artists Woodwind Competition after winning the regional and New York state competitions.

Keenan will accompany SUNY Potsdam sophomore Maria Schwartz of Williston, on the piano, while Schwartz plays the flute. Keenan has been playing the piano for 16 years. The national competition will be held from March 27 to March 31 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Keenan and Schwartz will be playing a 35 minute program consisting of flute and piano works by Burton, Blavet and Hue, and a flute solo piece by Muczynski. They will be competing against six other groups consisting of three flutists, two clarinetists and a saxophonist.

Keenan is majoring in musical studies and mathematics. She is a Mt. Emmons Scholar and a Presidential Scholar. She serves on the Presidential Scholar's Steering Committee and is the vice president of the Crane Association of Theory, Composition and History and the corresponding secretary of Sigma Alpha Iota.

Keenan is a member of Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Mu Epsilon and will soon be inducted into Phi Kappa Phi. She is a 2001 graduate of Spencerport High School and the daughter of Stephen and Terri Keenan of Spencerport.
