Students learn about women's history

Brockport High School is celebrating "Women's History Month" through a series of presentations open to the community. BHS graduate Shawn Ruger is funding the programs for the second year through the Dorothy J. Ruger Foundation, started in memory of his grandmother.

  • Thursday, March 16 - Traci Buch, sports reporter, Channel 13 News, Session 1: 9:45-10:30 a.m.; Session 2: 11:15 a.m. - noon, LGI. Buch has been part of the NewsSource 13 Sports Team since 1999. She received a regional Edward R. Murrow award for sports reporting and the Rochester Press-Radio Club Sportscaster of the Year award. Buch will discuss her experiences in the traditionally male-dominated field of sports casting.

  • Wednesday, March 24 - Bridget Shumway, founder/owner Generations Child Care, Inc., 1 p.m., Brockport High School LGI (Large Group Instruction) Room. Bridget Shumway, founder of Generations Child Care Center, built her business based on her experiences with her grandmother. Her positive memories inspired her to create a successful network of intergenerational child care centers. The centers serve both children and seniors. Her hope is that they will form friendships like the one she cherished with her grandmother. Shumway has also worked as an advocate for battered women and has served as an assistant to former Monroe County Executive Tom Frey.

  • Monday, March 29 - Gayle Danley, award-winning slam poet, performance conducting writing workshops, Brockport High School. Gayle Danley's studies of broadcast journalism at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and radio, TV and film production and writing at Syracuse University prepared her for a unique brand of poetry called Slam Poetry. She became enthralled with the slam philosophy that everyone is a poet with an important, urgent message worthy of wrapping tightly into verse, meter, rhyme and song. She is the 1994 National Poetry Slam Champion and 1996 International Slam Champ.

  • Wednesday, March 31 - Evening Book Discussion: "Chick Lit," facilitated by Marie Bindeman, Youth Services, coordinator, NIOGA Library System 7-8:30 p.m. in the High School Library. Discuss popular fiction geared toward literature about women. Bring favorite book to share.
