Norman Vandercook Ryan,
88, of Troy, NY

Norman Vandercook Ryan, 88, died peacefully at home in Troy, NY Monday, March 22, 2004. Mr. Ryan began working with his father and grandfather on the family’s beef and sheep farm as a young man. He later became the ninth generation of his family to own and operate the farm dating back to 1770.

The only child of Bernice Grant and Carrie (Burdick) Ryan, he was born November 11, 1915. Mr. Ryan also had operated Ryan Oil Company, beginning in 1950 until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Ryan was a member of the Raymertown Evangelical Lutheran Church and a Republican Committeeman in the Town of Pittstown. He was a former Pittstown Town Constable and at one time held membership in the Raymertown Volunteer Fire Company, the I.O.O.F. Raymertown Lodge, the Farm Bureau, the Association of Sheep Farms, the Rebekah’s Golden Ray Lodge, the Schaghticoke Fair Association and 4-H.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 55 years Eunice (Bennett) Ryan of Troy; sons Donald W. Wilcox of Pittstown, Charles L. Ryan (Marilyn) of Ballston Spa, Keith A. Ryan (Francine Patella) of Spencerport, Dale O. Ryan (Laura) of Troy; daughter Gretchen M. Ryan of Troy; grandchildren Jackie Wilcox of Wynantskill, Samuel Wilcox of Pittstown, Aaron Patella Ryan and Kiri Patella Ryan, both of Spencerport, Bradley Ryan and Christopher Ryan, both of Troy; brothers-in-law B. Alden Bennett of Schaghticoke, Orville (Rita) Bennett of Florida, Orvan Bennett of Albany; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Friday, March 26 at the Howard B. Tate and Son Funeral Home in Raymertown. Interment Maplewood Cemetery, which is located adjacent to the family farm. A local memorial service will be held in August.

In honor of Mr. Ryan’s participation with 4-H, a scholarship for 4-H members to pursue a college education will be established in the name of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ryan. Memorials for that purpose should be made to the Cornell Cooperative Extension and sent to their office at 249 Highland Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620.

•Muttart, Margaret M., (Colby), March 25, 2004, age 81. Predeceased by her husband Harry Colby. Survived by her son, William (Patty) Colby; sisters, Dorothy, Helen; grandchildren, Kristyn (Gus) Aganis, Shauna (Pat) Rox, Chad Colby, Michelle Cross; great-grandchildren, Stavros and Nikonas Aganis; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held March 27 at the Thomas E. Burger Funeral Home, Inc., Hilton. Interment, Parma Union Cemetery. Contributions can be made to Journey Home in her memory.

•Greenaker, Harold W., On March 31, 2004 at age of 76. He is predeceased by his parents, Harold and Ida, son, William, and brother, Richard. Survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Anne; children, Carol (William) Biel, Jackie Scopa, Arthur of Tampa, Florida and Harold (Lisa) also of Tampa, Florida; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held April 2 at Fowler Funeral Home Inc., Brockport. Private interment. Contributions can be made to Orleans County Hospice in his memory.

•Parke, Alice W., March 29, 2004 at age 84. She is predeceased by her parents, Gregory H. and Margaret O. Wick. She is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years William D. Parke; her loving children Suzanne A. Parke of Tallahassee, Florida, Gregory H. Parke of Otisville, and Joanne (Timothy) Hagy of Spencerport; her grandchildren Sondra (John) Krieg of Boston, Massachusetts, Rebecca Kain of Chicago, Illinois, William Kain of Canandaigua, and Justin Timineri of Tallahassee, Florida; her sister Mary Donnelly and nephew Jon Donnelly of Middletown. She was a member of the Catskill Art Society, a proprietor of the Middletown Art Gallery and Creek House Antiques, a member of the Horton Hospital Auxiliary and the Lenton Sewing Club.

Services were held at the convience of the family in Rochester. Interment Wallkill Cemetery, Middletown, New York. Memorial contributions can be made to the Association for the Blind, 422 South Clinton Avenue, Rochester, New York 14620 in her memory.


•Roberts, Rose W., age 85, died March 21, 2004 at her home in Cape Vincent. Born July 24, 1918, in Rochester, daughter of Charles and Anna Froetschl Felton. She worked for Bausch and Lomb Company retiring in 1978. Surviving are two sons and their wives, William E. and Linda, Cape Vincent and Robert D. and MaryLouise Roberts, Slingerlands, New York; a daughter, Beverly MacNeal, Cape Vincent; eight grand and 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Leonard Crist of Gates.


•Webster, Dorothy May, March 26, 2004, age 78. Mother of Claudia Goodenough, Jean D'Lallo, Nancy Howell and the late Terry Webster. Mother-in-law of Cathie Webster; sister-in-law of Beverly Norton; grandmother of Kelly, Daniel and Jillian; great-grandmother of Alexandra, Austin, Jenica and Eddie; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by son-in-law Edward Goodenough and brother Leo Norton.

•Miles, Barbara H., Peacefully, March 29, 2004 at age 85. She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Brayton G. Miles. Also survived by her devoted brother, Burton (Ellen) Hendershot; several cousins, including Bud Hendershot; also many neighbors and friends. She ran Barbara's Beauty Shoppe for many years. Barbara was a lifelong member of Hilton Baptist Church, very supportive of the Hilton Rotary Club through the Rotary Anns. The Rotary Club honored her by making Barbara a Paul Harris Fellow Recipient. Barbara and Brayton were longtime members of Parma Union Cemetery Board of Trustees. Barbara was one of Hilton's "Most Highly Respected Citizens" and will be greatly missed by so many.

•Williams, Marvin H., Sr., March 27, 2004, age 79. Predeceased by his wife, Marion. Survived by his children, Marvin (Patricia) Williams Jr., Barbara (John) Rawlings, Paul (Beth) Williams, David (Sandy Gaffney) Williams; brother, John (Arlene) Williams; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Marvin was a barber in the Greece area for over 40 years.

•Colucci, Florence D. "Florendi" (Billotti), 89 formerly of Kendall Road, died March 26, 2004 at Lakeside Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was a member of St. Mark's Church, a Charter member of the Holley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Western NY and Orleans County Auxiliary and Women of the Moose-Leroy Chapter 370.

She is survived by a son, Ralph L. (Diane) Colucci of Kendall; three daughters, Lydia (the late Anthony) Fallato of Holley, Rosalie (Jack) Curtis of Morton and Diane (Chris) Colucci of Holley; 25 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Ralph in 1985 and a daughter Marie (Daniel) Knittle.

A Mass of Christian Burial was said March 31 at St. Mark's Church, Kendall. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Holley. Memorials can be made to the church, Holley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Kendall Ambulance or the Monroe Ambulance.


•Maxon, Harold B., age 81 on March 24, 2004. Predeceased by brother, Richard Maxon and grandson, Joey Wilson. Survived by his wife of 57 years Lois; children, David Maxon, Mary Anne (Tom) Tuttobene, James (Annette), Sandra (Bob) Wilson, Eric (Vicky), Lorelei (Mark) Kessler; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Boyd (Barbara); sister, Bonnylu (John) Jenks; sister-in-law, Margot Maxon; and several nieces and nephews.

•Bauer, Alvin H., March 29, 2004 at age 85. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marian O. Bauer; his children, Janice Bauer, Gay (Donald) Lenhard and Patrick (Lois) Hotchkiss; four grandchildren, Kristy (Christopher) Farrand, Roberta (David) Dewey, Pamela Deneve and Alan (Allison) Hotchkiss; brothers, Clayton Bauer, Donald (Mary) Bauer and William (Eve) Bauer; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was a former Monroe County Deputy Sheriff, former Ogden Town Clerk; member of the Spencerport Lions Club and Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post #330.

A Memorial Service was held April 3, at the First Congregational UCC, 65 Church Street, Spencerport, NY 14559. Contributions can be made to the Memorial Fund of the First Congregational UCC in his memory.


•Freeman, Robert J., March 24, 2004 at age 89. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary (Nixon) Freeman; his daughter, Sally Shafer of Texas; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren. He was a retiree of Xerox following 36 years of service.

•Watt, Betty J. (Betsy), age 74, of Port Charlotte, Florida died March 3, 2004. She was born May 29, 1929, in Spencerport to Ben and Ann Hoye Everett. Mrs. Watt retired from the Spencerport School System, after 25 years of service. She moved from Spencerport to the Port Charlotte area in 1986. She was a member of Wintergarden Presbyterian Church in Murdock, Florida.

Predeceased by husband Gordon Watt. She is survived by her husband, Carl S. Snyder of Port Charlotte; and sister Mary Ann (Warren) Hewes of Spencerport.

Services and interment were held in Florida. Donations can be made to Spencerport High School Scholarship Fund in her memory.
