Parma Historian
Shirley Cox Husted
dies April 16

A horse-drawn carriage solemnly drew the casket of one of Parma’s most famous citizens up Parma Center Road on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 as Shirley Cox Husted was laid to rest amidst a gathering of her family, friends and admirers. Mrs. Husted died April 16, 2004 after several years of illness.

Born September 17, 1931, Mrs. Husted, 72, was a prolific author of more than 40 books on local history, folklore, poetry and cooking. After many years as co-editor of The Hilton Record, Mrs. Husted became the first co-editor of the Suburban News, around the time in the newspaper’s history when The Country Shopper was renamed to reflect the growing westside Monroe County communities. On September 11, 2003, she marked 36 years as Parma’s town historian (1967 until her death), and served as Monroe County Historian from 1973-88.

A lifelong Republican, she sought the office of Monroe County Clerk in 1989 but was unsuccessful in the attempt.

Among her many contributions to the town as historian, Mrs. Husted wrote a total of eight books about Parma, created a historical map, mugs and decorator plates, wrote highlights of Parma’s history for a number of other publications, supervised the development of the town’s museum at 462 Parma Center Road, erected four historical roadside markers, acquired a town emblem, established an official flower, fruit and town colors, designed the town flag, edited the first town newsletter, photographed and collected thousands of historical photographs, collected over a thousand books of historical importance and artifacts valued at over $100,000 and ran festival celebrations and quilt shows. Mrs. Husted also collaborated with county and town planning and zoning boards to preserve information on local buildings and landmarks of historical interest. Her book, Pioneer Days, was published in 1959 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Town of Parma.

Her interests and knowledge of local history reached to Irondequoit, as well, with her serving for three years as that town’s historian.

Profits from the sale of her books help fund the programs at the Parma Meetinghouse Museum, a Greek Revival structure built in 1844, the second oldest church building in Monroe County. She led the Friends group in organizing craft sales and events to help fund upkeep and repairs of the building. The most recent project is a work in progress -- the moving and refurbishing of an 1829 doctor’s office behind the museum.

Shirley Cox Husted graduated from Hilton High School in 1949 and was honored in 1999 as a Charter Member of the Hilton High School Alumni Hall of Fame. She was the daughter of Ward and Grace Hawes Cox; wife of Richard Husted; mother of Ted, Donald, Christopher, Brian, Brett and Rosemary; and sister of former Hilton Village Historian Leith Wright.

She graduated cum laude from Roberts Wesleyan College in North Chili in 1953 and attended Colgate-Rochester Divinity School in 1953-54.

Mrs. Husted was a charter member and founder of the Caleb Hopkins Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Services were held at the Thomas Burger Funeral Home in Hilton on April 20, with Rev. Robert Hathaway, former pastor (1947-1957) of the Parma-Greece Christian Church on Latta Road, officiating. Rev. Hathaway spoke of Mrs. Husted’s many talents including serving as organist for the church. Sons, Ted and Brett, and daughter, Rosemary, also spoke at the funeral, in addition to Rochester Historian Ruth Rosenberg-Naparsteck; Greece Historian and co-author with Mrs. Husted of Eight Miles Along the Shore, Virginia Tomkiewicz; and Hilton Historian Mary Pickett Townsend.

A post office box has been set up for those wishing to make memorial donations to Mrs. Husted's much loved project, the Parma Meetinghouse Museum: Friends of the Parma Meetinghouse Museum, P.O. Box 180, Fairport, New York 14450.

and Coordinator of the Hilton High School Alumni Hall of Fame.

Corrections
Brett Husted, son of the late Shirley Cox Husted, Parma historian, noted the following in regards to an obituary printed in the April 25, 2004 issue of some Westside News Inc. newspapers.

Brett Husted said the family is in the process of getting the exact count of how many books she wrote and co-authored and it's expected the tally will be more than 30 books and booklets, not 40 as stated in the article. "She was very productive," Brett Husted wrote in an email, "but I'm sure she wouldn't want her accomplishments overstated."

In addition to graduating cum laude from Roberts Wesleyan College, she was also valedictorian of the class, her son said.
