Funding for walkway to Veteran's Memorial received

Monroe County Legislature Peter McCann and Parma Town Supervisor Richard Lemcke have announced $13,000 for funding for the construction of an Americans with Disabilities compliant walkway at the Veterans' Memorial at the Parma Town Hall. Funding for this project comes as part of over $2.2 million in Community Development Block Grants designated for Monroe County.

"As a Vietnam veteran, I think it is important that this memorial is accessible to everyone in the community," McCann said.

"I'd like to thank the Federal government for their help with this project," Lemcke added. "This walkway will help make the monument accessible to all veterans."

Town officials said they worked closely with Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks to identify projects that would qualify for funding under the program. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the Community Development Block Grant, which Monroe County has distributed to participating towns since 1973. Funds are used for projects to benefit lower income families, elderly and disabled residents.

The Monroe County Legislature is expected to vote on the proposal at its June 8 meeting. Public comments can be directed to the Office of Community Development, Monroe County Department of Planning and Development, 8100 City Place, 50 West Main Street, Rochester, NY 14614. Comments must be received by May 17.

There will be a public hearing on all projects May 6 at the Fairport Village Office, 31 South Main Street in Fairport at 9 a.m., according to a county spokesperson.
