Change may be coming for DeMarco Property in Hamlin

The DeMarco Group has contacted the Hamlin Building Department to discuss adjusting their original proposal. In December 2003, the group's proposal to develop a portion of 135 acres of land off Lake Road West Fork into 24 senior citizen apartments and 25 single-family rental houses, drew criticism from Hamlin residents.

"They have heard the residents loud and clear," said Hamlin Supervisor Austin Warner III. "Wen you see a petition with 900 signatures you really have to look at that."

At this time, nothing further has been submitted by the developer. However, Warner said the developer is talking about reducing the number of low-income housing and changing the zoning to allow for houses to be built for sale on acre lots.

The town reviewed whether or not a moratorium on further development would be appropriate, due to the concerns with this development, but have not opted to take that route yet. There is no timeline on when the developer will present a revised proposal.

Warner said he has two main concerns with the original proposal. He wants to see further research done on how the development would be properly drained, and would want assurance that this project would not affect taxes.

"I don't want this to be a burden on the backs of the taxpayer," said Warner.
