Leslie A. Brighton, a candidate for a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of Art & Design at Alfred University, participated in a senior art show at Alfred University.

Brighton, a senior, is the son of Robert and Eileen Brighton of Ramblewood Drive, North Chili, and is a graduate of Churchville-Chili High School.

The AU Senior Shows, which are a requirement of graduation from Alfred University's art programs, have become major attractions for art lovers from throughout Western New York, drawn to Alfred for the openings by the opportunity to see work by some of the country's promising young artists.


Ryan Hickey of Village Walk, Spencerport, was inducted into the University's Kappa Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Established in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. The Syracuse University chapter is more than 100 years old. Membership is based upon academic achievement, intellectual breadth and good character. To be eligible, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.8 (on a 4.0 scale) after 90 to 104 credit hours, or a grade point average of at least 3.6 after 105 credit hours or more. Students must also study a foreign language through the intermediate level.

Hickey is a senior majoring in history and social studies.


Chad Hage, of Hollybrook Road, Brockport, was among Syracuse University student volunteers who helped Syracuse-area taxpayers fill out their 2003 income tax forms. The student volunteers are part of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a federal program funded by the Internal Revenue Service. The program is designed to help mainly lower-income people whose tax returns are not complicated but who may need help filing. Students receive training from the IRS, and must pass an open-book examination that takes no less than six hours.

Hage is a student at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. He is a junior majoring in accounting and finance.


R. Carroll Ugino of Hilton, a senior majoring in musical theater in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, participated in the Syracuse University Drama Department's production of "Chicago." Ugino played the role of Mary Sunshine.


Serdar Goz of Miramar Road, Rochester, a senior majoring in economics and political science in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, was inducted into the University's chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society.

Omicron Delta Epsilon Honor Society recognizes scholastic excellence and honors outstanding achievements among students of economics. To be eligible, students must be in their junior and senior year, have an overall grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), have a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all economics courses, and have successfully completed at least four upper-division economics courses.


Andrew Meyers, a Hope College junior from Churchville, received the Grace Marguerite Browning Scholarship in Voice during the annual honors convocation held on Thursday, April 22.

The prize of one voice lesson per week is awarded by the music department to the junior or senior who is a music major and has spent at least one year of resident study in the music department. The award is given to the student who, in the judgment of the department, best qualifies on the basis of talent and potentialities.

Meyers also received the Elizabeth Vanderbush Award in Education.

The Elizabeth Vanderbush Fund was established by Alvin Vanderbush in memory of his wife, an outstanding elementary school teacher. The fund is to assist deserving students who seek careers in education.


Daniel W. Burnett III, a junior ceramic engineering major in the School of Engineering at Alfred University, received two awards for his outstanding achievements during the University's annual honors convocation.

Burnett, a graduate of Spencerport High School, received the Mark S. Miller Memorial Scholarship, created in memory of a member of the Class of 1981. It is presented each year "to a sophomore, junior or senior who has shown excellence and promise in the study of ceramic engineering."

He also received the Harry J. Odink Memorial Award in Ceramic Engineering for his "outstanding ability in experimentation in laboratory courses."

Burnett is the son of Daniel and Karen Burnett of Sagewood Drive in Spencerport.


Air Force Airman Daniel Grashof, son of David and Elizabeth Grashof of Hilton and a 2002 graduate of Hilton High School, graduated from Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

During the (6) weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force Mission, organization and military customs and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.

He is attending Technical Training at Goodfellow Air Force Base, San Angelo, Texas.


Air Force Technical Sergeant Troy M. Soeder, son-in-law of Donald and Audrey Grolemund, Ridgefield Drive, Churchville, has been accepted as a candidate to Officer Training School. Tech. Sgt. Soeder, who works in the 755th Communications Squadron, is one of the 13 enlisted members from Offutt AFB, Nebraska to be selected.

His wife, Amy, daughter of Donald and Audrey Grolemund, was recently hired as a Community Readiness Specialist at the Offutt AFB Family Support Center.


Army National Guard Pvt. Steven R. Kozuch has graduated from the power-generation equipment repairer advanced individual training (AIT) course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Aberdeen, Maryland.

Kozuch is the son of Eileen A. Kozuch of Clinton Avenue, Fredonia, and Richard M. Kozuch of Manitou Road, Hilton.


Air Force Senior Airman Amy M. Kingdollar has been named Airman of the Year for the 60th Medical Operations Squadron for 2003.

Selection was based on the individual's exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, significant self-improvement, and other specific achievements and notable accomplishments. Kingdollar is a mental health technician assigned to the 60th Medical Operations Squadron, Travis Air Force Base, California. She has three years of military service.

She is the daughter of Larry J. Kingdollar of South Fancher Road, Holley, and Margaret A. Giles of Heritage Estates, Albion.

The senior airman graduated in the year of 2000 from Holley High School.


Army Pvt. Joshua P. Fregoe has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Knox, Kentucky, which consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT).

Fregoe is the son of Lee R. and Lisa M. Fregoe of Emily Court, Bergen, and is a 2003 graduate of Byron-Bergen High School, Bergen.
