Finger Lakes Men regain championship by a narrow margin

The Finger Lakes Community College men's team, with only one returning player from the previous year, carved a very narrow victory in competition against seven four-year schools in the 58th Annual Spring Woodsmen's competition held at Dartmouth College.

The Finger Lakes men took top honors with a total of 1,455.5 points out of a possible 1,900. The University of Maine, Orono placed second with 1,453.8; Paul Smith's College finished third with 1,453.4; Syracuse Environmental Science and Forestry, strongly favored to win the 58th, placed fourth with 1,449.4.

Throughout the two-day competition, the accumulating point spread between the top five teams remained very close; the lead swapped numerous times as even scores were posted.

The ESF women's team that included FLCC graduates Lisa-J Bobsiene, Cattaraugus, Laura Eames, Varysburg, Holly Coyle, Ovid, and Annie Allison, Hornell, easily won their division with 1,565 points, 170 points ahead of the second place Paul Smith's women. The FLCC women placed sixth overall with 1,120 points.

Daryl Swiernik, Lowville, won the axe throw event for the Finger Lakes Men's first team. Swiernik and John Rentschler, Victor, placed first in the singles canoe race. Rentschler and Joe Morse, Canandaigua, won the log decking event. Andy Clement, Canandaigua, and Matt Hass, Bristol, finished second in the canoe portage race; Clement placed second in the pole climb. The men's first team, including Greg Coyqut, Captain, Victor, won both the team log roll and the backboard relay race.

The Finger Lakes Men's second team finished fifth overall with a score of 1,234 points. Chris Davanzo, Pittsford, won a first place in the fly casting event. James Todd, Hornell, won the men's pole climb. Todd and Andy Fuerst, Avoca, placed second in the water boil. The second team, including John Hunt, Churchville, Brian Derks, Shortsville and Jessie Raeder, Grand Gorge, scored 87 points out of 100 in the packboard relay, less than half a minute behind the first place team.

Sarah McGregor, Captain, Canandaigua, placed second in the obstacle race; Katie Hilfiker, Geneseo and Andrea Porter, Lacona, earned second on the double canoe race; Dennise Haley, Springwater, and Katrina Ruppersberger, Canandaigua, finished second in the scoot load event. The six, including Jessica Coon, Stanley, took a second place in team Swede saw. The women placed third in chain throw, fire build and canoe portage and in the team pulp toss and team crosscut sawing.
