Support group for parents forming in Spencerport

A new support group designed to help parents share parenting strategies is being formed at the Family Support Center at Spencerport Central School. The program, Better Days Ahead, is a joint effort of the Family Support Center and the Mental Health Association. The free program is open to all families in the area, not just Spencerport residents.

The group helps parents develop strategies for dealing with children and adolescents. Sessions often feature guest speakers who offer insights on various parenting topics.

"We're finding that parents are very interested in programs that help them gain new tools and ideas for parenting," said Mark Fish, center director.

Coordinator Donna Rugh of the Better Days Ahead program says that parents benefit from support programs. "Parents feel a lot better when they realize they're not the only ones facing the issues of parenting children with emotional and/or behavioral challenges," she said.

The group meets the second and fourth Thursdays of the month during the school year with monthly meetings planned for the summer. Free childcare is provided. For information or to register, call the Family Support Center at 349-5155.

The Family Support Center is a collaborative effort of the Spencerport Central School District, Town of Ogden and Village of Spencerport.
