Lakeside honors Twig Association at luncheon
Lakeside Health System hosted a luncheon at Pinewood Country Club on May 20 to celebrate the work and support of the LMH Twig Association throughout the year. The Twig Association supported the "Building for the Next Generation Capital Campaign with a pledge of $76,022, in addition to $51,800 already pledged. more

Local Marine receives Navy Cross
At the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Training Center in California, Churchville native Marine Captain Brian Chontosh received the naval service's second highest award, the Navy Cross. This was awarded to him for extraordinary heroism while serving as Combined Anti-Armor Platoon Commander, Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. more

Meningitis vaccine clinics scheduled for college-bound students
The Monroe County Department of Public Health will conduct meningococcal vaccination clinics at its offices located at 111 Westfall Road on the following dates: Mondays, June 7 and 21, Mondays, July 12 and 26, and Mondays, August 2 and 16. All clinics are from 3 to 7 p.m. more

Spencerport Firemen continue
summer carnival tradition

It's a tradition that dates back over 60 years - the Spencerport Fire Department offering the community festive summertime events. In 1937, Ed McKinney, Sr. and Ken Barclay were part of the original committee of volunteer firemen who decided they needed a fundraising event. more

Full day of events set for Bergen Park Festival
The 15th annual Bergen Park Festival begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 12 at Hickory Park on Route 19 with an Antique Car Show organized by Sullivan Agency, children's games, vendors and music. A parade at 2 p.m. will travel down Route 19 and at 3 p.m., the Batavia Big Band performs. more

Monroe County Legislator Pete McCann gave a stirring address on the meaning of Memorial Day, recounting his experience in Vietnam and a buddy, Jerry Wilson, who didn't make it back at a holiday observance in Hilton May 31. more

"Read, White & Blue" summer reading program

All youth ages three years old through senior high school are invited to sign up at the Parma Public Library anytime between Monday, June 28 and July 12 to participate in New York State's "Read, White & Blue" Summer Reading Program. more

Four seek two seats in Brockport election
In a village that has been known historically for running nonpartisan political campaigns, voters who go to the booth in Brockport's June election will be faced with two Republican party endorsed candidates and two candidates running on local, independent party lines. more

Munn Elementary School Principal Todd Yunker became the first school principal to participate in the local Ride for Missing and Exploited Children when he participated in the May 20 bike ride. more

BOCES 2 offers a summer Culinary Camp
Seventh and eighth graders who like to cook or think they'd like to cook can learn what it takes to be a chef in a week-long summer program to be offered locally. Students will participate in hands-on activities and have the opportunity to visit the Wegmans Test Kitchens and work with culinary arts staff and Wegmans chefs to prepare a variety of tasty dishes. more

While Hilton School District's $57.9 million in capital construction and renovation continues throughout the next year-and-a-half, construction manager, Christa Construction of Victor, has employed two Hilton High School students as interns. more

Kendall students complete career internships
Eight Kendall students completed their final presentations in the Career Education Internship Program (CEIP) through Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES. The CEIP gives high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to work with mentors in up to four career areas while attending school. more

Thanks to students from WE-MO-CO Career and Technical Education Center and SUNY Brockport, a group of Orleans County students know that it doesn't take a lot of money to get a winning look. more

Parabolic solar oven really works!
The focal point of the parabolic dish solar oven so concentrates the sun's energy that food can be cooked. This use of solar energy was explored by technology students at Hilton's Merton Williams Middle School last month in teachers Jim Reichert's and Matt Wermuth's classes. more

Roberts Wesleyan SIFE team makes top 20 at national championship
The Robert Wesleyan College chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (RWC-SIFE) competed at the National Championship at the World Competition SIFE USA National Exposition in Kansas City, May 23-25. more

Spencerport schools honored for safety
Spencerport Central School District is one of 43 school districts and Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) organizations statewide to receive this year's School Safety Excellence Award from the Utica National Insurance Group. more

Spencerport Schools honors volunteers
Spencerport Schools recently honored the contribution of more than 1,100 volunteers who donated more than 25,000 hours of volunteer time during the 2003-04 school year. Three volunteers, Bob Dennis, Vicki DeRooy, and Lauri Fallon, contributed more than 1,000 hours each. more

Spencerport's BPA plants tree to honor retiring principal
The Spencerport Central School District Bernabi Parents' Association planted a tree in honor of Principal Maura Eagle at a recent meeting. Eagle is retiring at the end of this year and was presented a poem written for her. more

Chili Senior Center programs
The Chili Senior Center is selling the Passport to Savings book for the Spirit of Ontario fast ferry. The book, which includes numerous discounts for Rochester and Toronto, costs $25. The boarding pass, which is included in the book, can be redeemed for $25 off any trip fare (or $28 off an adult foot passenger fare). more

Blue Devils win Class AAA Crown
After knocking off top-seeded Fairport 3-2 in the semi-finals, 4th-seeded Brockport advanced to the Class AAA Section Five championship game and defeated #2 Rush-Henrietta 9-4 for their second consecutive title. Brockport had lost to both Fairport and R-H twice each during the regular season. more

Bright Raven Gymnastics dominates Dare to Be Great meet
Bright Raven Gymnastics hosted the third annual Dare to Be Great Invitational May 22-23 and finished on top in nearly every division. Over two hundred young gymnasts represented nine clubs with Bright Raven taking two first place team awards and one second. more

The 15th Annual Chil-E Festival is scheduled for July 23, 24, 25 and will be held at Memorial Park, 3235 Chili Avenue. In addition to Midway Rides of Utica and food booths, evening entertainment is as follows; Ruby Shooz - 8 to 11 p.m. Friday; 7th Heaven - 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Nik & the Nice Guys - 7 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. more

Golden Eagles reach final six
In their first-ever appearance in the Division III College World Series featuring the top eight teams in the country, Brockport defeated Aurora College from Illinois 5-2 before losing two heart-breaking one run games to top-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University and host Wisconsin-Whitewater. more

Golf tourneys raise funds for cancer research
The 23rd Annual Ladies Sally Edelman-Harry Gardner Cancer Research Foundation (CRF) Golf Tournament is planned for Wednesday, June 23 at 9 a.m. at Deerfield Country Club. The $70 per person fee, four person scramble format includes breakfast, greens fees, carts, dinner and a golfer's vest with the CRF Logo. more

Gymnasts perform in Hilton's new gym
The Village Elementary School Sixth Grade Gymnastics Show was held in the school's new gymnasium. Sixth grade gymnasts performed tumbling and floor exercises as well as on the balance beam, uneven parallel bars and other equipment May 26 in the newly-constructed gymnasium at the Village Elementary School. more

Hilton-Parma Recreation releases summer program brochure
The Hilton Parma Recreation Department has released its summer program brochure with registration opening on Monday, June 7. Brochures have already been distributed through the school district and are also available at the Parma Public Library, Parma Town Hall and the Village Community Center at 59 Henry Street. more

Ogden Recreation's upcoming summer programs
There is still time to register for the following summer programs: swim lessons, lacrosse, basketball, golf league, soccer, football, baseball, volleyball and summer camp. All programs have registration deadlines. more

Registration forms available for Firecracker 5K run
In conjunction with the 26th Annual Picnic in the Park, the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council is hosting the Firecracker 5K Run for the Arts on Sunday, July 4. This year, for the first time, the race course will be officially certified. more

VanWyngaarden wins RYABA Class C trophy
Angelica VanWyngaarden (right) holds her 1st place RYABA Class C bowling trophy. She earned a $100 scholarship for her win. She teamed up with Casey MacClaren to win the Mixed C Doubles event, earning them each another $100 scholarship. more
